    Hello Randy,
I see that the link I sent you is now dead, it was a step by step for rec DV to DVD..
Did you try it? Did it work? What did you find? Did you try a different DV tape or DVD?
Since I do not own a DVM6000 it is hard for me to re-create your scenario so feedback is essential.
Can you play the tape from the camera?
Have you successfully recorded to a DVD in the past?
How about trying this link: https://www.usjvc.com/faq/index.php?action=show&cat=6

Please let us know YOUR findings.

The stock lens has always been the Fujinon 16x. Not sure why people are referring to it as a 14x. I would strongly recommend upgrading to a 13x or 18x lens. The 16x is OK but it’s not really an HD lens. Why not try it out for yourself though, worst thing to happen is you don’t like it.

    About the codecs:(720/24, 720/30. 720/60)
FCS2 6.0.2 updates will support all JVC codecs.
FCS2 6.0.3 updates have some issues with JVC codecs.
Not sure about the newest FCE but it looks like it supports a bunch of codecs, should probably find out though. HDV 720/30 is generally not an issue, it’s 24p and 60p that start causing problems.

Even if it doesn’t support the exact codec, use MPEG Streamclip and convert to something useful.

  • Is the final format for broadcast? Local or National? Unless your local can accept HD then it will most likely be SD. It would be worth it to call the station tech and find out what the best thing to bring them would be. Usually Beta SP. If you can’t do that then a DVD is probably the best thing since they just dub the DVD straight to the Beta deck. Giving them a ‘file’ or a ‘foreign media’ will allow them the chance to really destroy your hard work. But that’s just been my experience. Make it IDOT PROOF for them. Let me know how the render turns out.

  • Are you using a letterbox compression? I have never gotten anything good from letterbox-ing the 720p footage from the JVC to SD. are you mixing SD footage with the JVC 720p? If you are, make sure that the 720p codec has priority in the timeline otherwise there may be problems.

  • Agreed. Finalizing is a slow gotten hard earned reward for those who stick with it. I use Apple’s Compressor and have some ‘tweaked’ settings that i refer to commonly. It pays to find the best solution with your system. Then once you have it ‘Save it’. Same for web, HD, etc.
So are you saying that the SD footage looks good on the computer but bad on a standard TV? Hmm. Is it choppy or quirky in any way or is it just the sharpness? Hopefully we can get to the exact problem.

  • I am not familiar with Vegas but are there different compression settings for DVD? For sure it’s not going to look like the 30p footage did in 720p but it should look decent. Interlaced blows! I would check to see if there is a ‘High Quality’ setting with your Vegas software and try a small render first to see if this helps the sharpness and overall quality go up. Please let us know when you get something.

JVC HD200 or HD250. Real 24p, 30p and 60p. looks great, good form factor, nice lens options (13x).

JVC is real 24p. Canon is ‘blended’ 24F (fields). If you can live with the resolution loss than you should be fine in post as long as you convert the canon footage to match the JVC codec or visa versa or just use apple’s ProRes. Just make sure they’re the same.

Find out what cam they shot on and see if they can loan it to you so that you can get the footage. I don’t think buying a piece of equipment for the sole purpose grabbing LP recorded footage is necessary. Just be sure to tell your clients not to do it. They should take advice from someone like you who understands formats and conversions and such. Best of luck.
