I tried a friend’s upgraded program, and the “mask” (in say the shape of a rectangle) left a faint trace of itself, which could not be removed – at least I could not figure out how to do it.

What is the control that will “slow down” the video in Vegas?
(I was also thinking of “lacing” the water with a bit of clear “Jello” and before it got too thick, put the Alka Seltzer tablets in it.)

The DVDA properties shows an “Extras” but no guidance what to do next.
?? Go ahead and burn the DVD, then put it back in the PC, and ???
(It is not very intuitive – at least, not for my peabrain.)

Yes, ideally it should go from computer (say MPG2) to miniDV camcorder, unfortunately the laptop on which I edit does not have firewire.
Different issue: My friend says that there is a slight flaw in synchronization between video and audio in the “final product” which is 3/4 inch casettes (what he gives to the TV station.)
My results, when finished rendering play in my laptop in perfect sync. Also look OK on the resulting DVD. But that DVD gets transferred (I don’t know how) to a MiniDV casette, then to 3/4 inch, then assembly edited onto another 3/4 inch deck. Could all this processing cause the sync=problem?

Thank you, the segments are less than 20 minutes. I can do what you are suggesting. I assume this would better preserve quality. But I wonder how he would “extract” them into Mini-DV which he (must) use? (He has no computer of any kind.) I would not be able to tell him because I do not know. Could you elaborate on this, please?

That would only be true if the pixels were square but as Joe pointed out, they are not. Standard Definition NTSC pixels are 0.9091 in width (NTSC DV). So you must multiply 720 x 0.9091 and get 654.552. In reality, what you perceive to be 720×480 is really 655×480 which is 1.3645 ratio.
Aha, I was not aware of this, and now I understand! However, it does not “solve” my problem of the needed letterboxing. Is there a way adjust the Vegas settings to avoid this?

What camera produced 640×424? This is a non standard format and there is no way to fit it into any broadcast standard format without cropping or letterboxing.
This is a Nikon DSLR D5100, which (according to its manual) produces three sizes of video: 1920×1080, 1280×720, and 640×424, stated as “frame size in pixels.”
