Hello and sorry for the delay I was on travel status. I did not wish regular subtitles, I do know how to add those. I wanted closed captioning so DVD viewers would have a choice of seeing them or not. However, in addition, since I had done all the labor, I wanted to produce a DVD with the captions shown all the time (in effect, like regular subtitles.)The recommendation of using Tools>Scripting>Export Closed Captioning for YouTube does not seem to render a (say) mpg or MP4 file, as I expected. Any further advice/direction would be appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestion, indeed John’s tutorial is one of the best, well-paced, lucid ones that I have encountered. I managed to finish my (probably one-shot) closed captions session, but I thought I would pass on some comments:
1. Either the program I was using (Vegas 11 Pro,) or the program John’s instructions referred to, are somehow different, or perhaps I lost my way. The reason is, that as I understood it, adding a “blank” (no text) command would stop the previous caption. Well, it did not do that, I had to use a command with at least a “.” (period) to stop the previous caption, and unfortunately it left a small black bar with the “.” in its place. (Not bad, but not preferred, either.)
2. The demo showed a listing “box” of commands, in which there was a column for the “time-in” of each caption, and also another column for the “time out” of the same caption. Unfortunately, the listing produced by my version of Vegas had only the column for “time in,” there was no column for “time out.”

Apparently my version Vegas 11 (Platinum) does not have these 3 features. I wonder if Vegas 12 (Platinum) does? I have bought but not yet opened a new copy of V11, and could return it and obtain a V12 (Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite 12)
(A key feature that I use a lot is the 10 Video timelines on V11, I could use even more…

Thank you both for your quick and very clear directions on my 3 previous queries (including this one.) Unfortunately, the version of Vegas 11 I’m using does not exhibit these great features! (I think it is 11 Platinum.) – Sadly I just bought an extra copy of the samme V11 for use on another machine…

Many thanks, John, for your quick and informative reply! There was much improvement in the visual aspect of Vegas, using Windows settings in a small (15.5″) screen.
….but it seems to me, that Sony/Vegas should add a feature which allows a certain adjustment to their background and lettering. Perhaps you can pass it on…?

Thank you very much, this is most useful. there is no firewire port in either of my available laptops. But there may be one in a desktop. If there is, say I copied the resulting (format) to the desktop (via a USB zipdrive) there is no way to “copy” it to a miniDV casette, unless the desktop has Vegas installed, right?

Also: A little Sony miniDV player/recorder seems to have a USB port in it. I wonder if that would connect USB>USB to the laptop, and via Vegas the transfer to tape could be done? (I don’t have its owners’ manual.)

Thank you, I progressed but I am still confused:
After editing, at the RENDER AS stage:
If I select Mainconcept MPG2 – DVDA NTSC Widescreen, below appears the info: 720×480, Pixel aspect ratio 1.212 (which can’t be right, it is not widescreen.)
If I select Match Project Settings, the only video on the resulting list below is “Internet 1920×1080, & below it states: Use this setting to create the highest quality 16:9 file suitable for uploading to Internet sites. It is an xxx.mp4 file. (Which is not what is desired. What is desired is the highest quality for a standard-play DVD disk.)
any additional help or clarification would be appreciated.

Sorry, I did not explain well. I am NOT targeting Blue-ray, rather the opposite: I’m trying to develop old-fashioned DVDs that play in most (older) DVD players. “Match project properties” gave me a list of items (a big list) which confused me. (But if it’s automatic, that’s OK, provided the original project properties are set to match the original video.) Hence at least half of my question. What are the proper project properties to match the video?

Thank you! It was the “project properties” that controlled the size of the captured still frame. Changed that and the resulting photos were the size of the project properties, e.g., 1920×1080.
