PC-Vegas to Mini-DV Disk?
Hello again after a long time…
I use Vegas and would like to create (“render”) a video and transfer it to an old friend’s “ancient” mini-DVD casette. I’ll be looking at its connections (my PC’s output is only USB) but would like to know which of the many formats (available to render in Vegas) is suitable for his equipment? (He uses NTSC standard 4:3 format. The casettes are standard size approx 6.5×4.8cm.

I assume you mean Mini-DV and that requires a Firewire port on your PC with a Firewire cable connected to his Mini-DV camera. There is no way around that. USB won’t work. No Firewire? No Print to Tape!
Once you have the camera connected via Firewire you can go to the Vegas Pro menu and use:
Tools | Print Video to Tape….
That will give you the option of printing from the timeline or printing an already rendered file.

You don’t need to render. Print to Tape will render what it needs. If you want to print from a file, then render as:
Video for Windows (*.avi) | NTSC DV
This assume the video is 4:3 and not 16:9 (but I think you said it was 4:3) If it’s 16:9 use the NTSC DV Widescreen template.

Thank you very much, this is most useful. there is no firewire port in either of my available laptops. But there may be one in a desktop. If there is, say I copied the resulting (format) to the desktop (via a USB zipdrive) there is no way to “copy” it to a miniDV casette, unless the desktop has Vegas installed, right?
Also: A little Sony miniDV player/recorder seems to have a USB port in it. I wonder if that would connect USB>USB to the laptop, and via Vegas the transfer to tape could be done? (I don’t have its owners’ manual.)

That’s right. You need Vegas Pro installed to Print to Tape.

No. That is for transferring images or for low quality web cam output. You will only get full quality via the firewire port.
