Thank you for your prompt reply. I believe his primary use will be to take ordinary VHS video (PAL), and essentially digitize it and save it in the PC; eventually to convert to DVD.
Any recommendations (on the inexpensive side?)

Thank you, I appreciate your help. That was good advice, but no luck. I’ve re-installed Vegas 5 again, and simply connected it to my D-8 camcorder, and played a D-8 tape through firewire. No luck, no capture. A brief glimpse of the playing video on the Vegas capture preview screen (less than 1 second) then reverts to black. The little round record button is “live” but it can only capture black. Meanwhile, the D-8 tape is running and I can see it in the camcorder’s LCD. I think maybe the firewire PCI card has gone bad…although usually it’s the software’s fault somewhere, not the hardware.

Thank you both. I uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas. It now seems to accept (occasionally) a video from the Digital-8 camcorder, but will not accept a “passthrough” S-Vhs>Camcorder>Computer. Actually it does show the video for about 1 second, then the screen goes blue….but the audio continues!

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately not only have I double-checkedd the capture location, but even tried different locations at different hard drives. I would not have bothered you kind folks in this forum if I had not become tired (and desperate.)

I don’t do this very often, so it’s good to be reminded. I’ll type an S at either end of the segment(s.)
I read in another thread that if I can extract a video “VOB” from a DVD, and merely change the .VOB into .MPG, then Vegas will be able to use it.
This particular movie has no sound, so I don’t need to worry about audio in this case. But I haven’t a clue what is “demuxing” of audio is. Is that a real word?

I tried, with a HD in a drawer installed, to go Control panel/system/Hardware/Device Manager/disk drives/ selected the “drive in a drawer”. But could find no way to change it, no option to select “removable,” other than enable-disable it.

The exact boot sequence (with the drawer empty) shows the startup, which then provides a black screen, with: Strike F1 key to Reboot, F2 for setup Utility. Striking the F1 does nothing except repeat the two choices above. Striking the F2 key brings up a DOS type screen, presumably the BIOS screen, because it says so on the top right. This identifies a Primary Drive 0; a Primary Drive 1; a Secondary Drive 0; and a Secondary Drive 1. Opposite each it reads “Unknown Device.” Doesn’t seem one can proceed further.

Thank you, I wish I knew more about this tech. In fact, the jumpers are on the HDs, but the problem is when there is NO hard drive in the drawer(When the bay is empty.) When any of the extra HDs are in the drawer, in the bay, there are no conflicts, no problems!
The matching receptacles which are pre-fitted to the bays of the two PCs, and which receive the drawers with the HDs inside them, do not have jumpers. It must be some configuration of the PCs which is different, I figure.
When the same drawers (containing the same HDs) are inserted on the other PC, no problems, but also the other PC has no problems and works fine even when that bay is empty!
Totally beyond my tech knowledge!
But I appreciate the help and suggestions!
