I always come back to the thought that if Apple could have released FCPX with all these features they would have. If writing software was that easy anyone could do it, right? So it took them until now to get it, hopefully, right.

As soon as I can get it downloaded and installed I have a multicam edit I just started that I can’t wait to try out with the new version ….

DRW “But, it is not the “transformative” app that is the answer to all things that Bill Davis and others like to claim it is.”

That statement, in my humble opinion, sums up what’s wrong with this whole debate. I see the “pro” FCPX people largely saying “Hey, it does this well, I really like this function, actually it does do this thing” all the while acknowledging there are missing pieces and limitations. I don’t recall anyone seriously saying FCPX will be all things to all people. Maybe somewhat transformative…

I do see some of the “anti” people saying FCPX is worthless and a slap in the face. The same people seem to speak in absolutes and ascribe absolutes to the pro FCPX folks. I find it much easier to take the more measured comments seriously.

Personally I’ve used it for a few non-critical projects (things I could quickly recover from in the event of a major malfunction) and do find it faster for most of my purposes and actually fun again. Sometimes. I’m waiting for the next update to decide whether or not to commit, and even then I have CS installed just in case. Measured, not all or nothing.

I used Liquid for several years, back when it was designed to compete with Avid, before they bought it (and still think it was far, far ahead of it’s time). It had autosave, with the option to save a duplicate project sans media. It took a little while (a couple of software versions) but after they got the bugs out it became completely reliable, solid as a rock. I expect FCPX to do the same, hopefully soon.

You know, I have to assume that writing top quality bug free software must be a little harder than people assume. Otherwise it would all be, well, top quality and bug free.

That’s what I was afraid of … Maybe they’ll add one in. Thanks.

I started frequenting this forum when FCPX was released because hoped to learn. The main thing I’ve learned is that “Pro” appears to be defined as ” what I do and on up”, and that’s sad. The personal attacks are pretty unprofessional and surprising from the reputation of the Cow, and, yes, I’ve read the entire thread.

  • I just had to do something similar, using FCPX.It’s very easy to switch between “projects” (think “sequences”) in FCPX and just cut and paste as needed. Although you can accomplish the same things with secondary storylines and auditions.

There are several valid workflow issues with FCPX. This one is minor, with at least 3 ways to accomplish the goal and they are at least equal to having multiple sequences open.

Well, your posts are passionate, and that’s great. Some other folks just sound mean-spirited.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself. That “passive-agressive” is getting tired. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here say Apple hasn’t screwed up the release of FCPx and the retirement of FCP7. Generally the comments from the positive side are that FCPX is an unfinished product with great potential, and requests to tone down the comments a little.

I’ve had two previous systems EOL’d out from under me, and I wasn’t very happy when that happened, either, so I’m not without sympathy and I’m certainly not entirely happy with this current situation either. (And frankly I’ve enjoyed some of your comments particularly for entertainment value as well as valid criticisms.)

The knee-jerk kicking by some folks on here of anyone who actually likes or is even interested in FCPX is pretty interesting, though. There’s a guy who started a thread a couple of days ago praising FCPX and the way he got pounded made me wonder if he was just jerking people’s chains. If so, it sure worked.
