So i was editing yesterday a wedding movie on final cut pro x, i worked for almost 4 hours, finished and quit. Today i came back to continue working and i saw that final cut pro didn’t save anything of my work, everything is gone! all the hard work is gone ! can anyone tell me please what the hell is going on ?! what’s the cause of this problem? and is there a way to retrieve the unsaved files?
    thanks

    Hi Christopher,

So sorry to hear of the nightmare you must of had, I am lucky enough not to of gone though this, When you open FCPX does it show you the project at all – upto any stage of it ? can you see you footage – also do you have any drives not mounted from yesterday ? I had a FW800 and saved my projects on there and when that is not mounted it can see them …

Hope this helps in some way … good luck !

    Christopher,

You should be more detailed in describing this kind of problems, because “everything is gone” of course sounds interesting, but not informative enough to tell “what the hell is going on”. Events disappeared? Project disappeared? All projects disappeared? Project is there, but empty? And so on… Lots of meanings of “everything is gone”. Define it, please.

yeah sorry for the lack of details but I was really annoyed.
Anyway i started editing this wedding since tuesday and everything is working fine.
Yesterday before starting to work i changed the project audio properties from dolby to stereo because i didn’t needed that then i began to work as usual, everything is good and fluid.
Today i opened final cut pro, opened my project and I saw that all the work of yesterday wasn’t saved.
The timeline is still as i left it on Wednesday, the music is available in the event library and the clips are available also, nothing is missing, but all the work in the timeline, the cuts, the transitions, the effects are not there ! it’s like i just imported the audio and the clips to the event library and didn’t work on them but that’s not the case !
    Hope this sounds clearer. Thanks

There is a bug where the autosave does not work, it is probably the biggest problem with FCPX at the moment. The way to tell if X is NOT saving your work is that the “undo” function does not work and is greyed out. It seems you may have had this problem and not known it.

I have found that if you regularly check that the ‘undo’ function is working then you can be sure your project is being saved. It’s clunky I know, but it can help

Steve thanks a lot man i never imagined that i should check the undo button to know that my project was being saved, thats kinda sucks and is not practical !! but let’s assume that the project is not being saved how can I save it manually? there’s no save button in the menu.

Just ask the sweet couple to get married again. Next time FCPX might work… ; )

haha i’m glad that my original footage is still there but if it wasn’t, i would ask them to marry again and invite the 300 guests again 🙂

[Christopher Kechichian] “but let’s assume that the project is not being saved how can I save it manually? there’s no save button in the menu.

You can’t save manually, yes I know it’s stupid, REALLY stupid, especially when the autosave is unreliable and they haven’t implemented versions into the software yet.

In FCP7 I would manually save my projects every hour, I’ve simply replaced that in FCPX with checking the undo works every hour, it’s the closest you can get to an actual ‘Save”
