In addition to the forum leaders, the people that respond to requests for help here have often experienced the exact same situation. Occasionally, an industry pro may comment, but it’s people like Douglas Spotted Eagle, John Rofrano and others here that can often help bring light to the end of the tunnel!

I have been dealing with Mac-Heads for many years, now. I have had employees, often college students in training, who are so taken by the Apple doctrine, that it borders on hilarity! You really have to let them know that you are a PC shop when interviewing them. Plenty of clients, who don’t know Final Cut from Final Notice, just have to tell you that they’ve heard that “You really can’t even edit a video unless you have the latest Mac.” But we still hand them the finished project that came from Vegas on a PC. Next time they are in for a project, the subject never even comes up!

If your computer is a PC running Windows Vista, you can use the free Snipping Tool that is already included. Works great!

Saw your choice of Asus mboard. I just installed an Asus in my most recent build. Great board, solid and has Express Gate – very helpful program built-in to the chipset and activates on bootup. Check it out!

Make sure you install plenty of fans for ventilation(the larger, quieter kind with adjustable fan speed dial that you can route out the back of the case), a quality, quiet (Zalman) CPU cooler, and front card reader. Consider a Sata system drive or, you might also consider a Solid State Drive for a system drive. There are (3)OCZ SSDs on the New Egg site. Read the reviews on them before deciding. SSDs are blazing fast as system drives and have enough space for Vista 64, but they can be a bit complicated. Use(2)Sata drives (same brand, model and capacity) that you can set up in the Vista software as a single raid drive system for media. Sata drives are super cheap right now. You will get better overall performance putting your AVCHD media on the raid. Setup to a minimum of Raid 0. The i7920 proc is fast, but the real speed is in the $1K 960. Good Luck.

Prices are falling for components needed to put together a very fast edit workstation. I have built(3)edit workstations in the past 18 months now running Vista 64bit based upon Intel or Asus Motherboards, Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad Core processors, big power supplies, lots of cooling, and plenty of ram. These are gradually replacing older systems in our studios. I am now pricing/shopping for a 4th system. Intel iCore procs are very fast indeed, and the 920 version is reasonably priced. But, you will need a pricy motherboard and DDR3 ram to work with it, so plan on spending extra if you go that route. Some features on the newer, mboards to look for are HDMI, external Sata connectors, and soon, USB3. Check out NewEgg for reviews and pricing. Good luck!

I am just now testing the built-in HDMI out of the new mother board in a new edit system that I just built. This is sent to a 19″ Wide inexpensive LCD computer monitor recently purchased. Getting the signal out is a Bios thing. Will post the result.

Is your edit bay room large enough for you to place a mic stand/VO mic setup away from your computer connected by a longer mic cable?This might mean that you have to start your audio recording app and walk over to your mic stand for the VO. Getting some distance from the noise source and positioning your mic properly can drastically reduce the problem. Also consider a temporary buffer/shield between that mic setup and the noise source. Without cutting off adequate ventilation, you might also try a temporary sound blanket partially around the drive bay.

Do you have any extra large still images on the timeline? Red on the timeline is often associated with still images that are way too big.

When I upgraded to Vegas 8.0c, the AVCHD that I shoot, (1440 x 1080i), immediately played smoother. Along with that, 1920 x 1080 clips, from a different camera, that are encoded with a Quicktime wrapper and that would not even be recognized or play in 8.0b, actually play great in 8.0c. This is on a Core 2 Duo system with Raid 0 and 2 GB of ram.
