What are the inputs on the projector? What is the rated resolution of the projector? If it has HDMI, you could use (purchase) one of the new Western Digital HD Media Players($100). This great little device plays from a portable hard drive, pen drive, etc. via USB port with exceptional quality. It also has composite AV out. You could also play the DVD out from the HDMI port of your DVD player, or from the Component out if the projector has Component in. Compare the overall quality to that of a laptop out (preferably with DVI out). Good luck!

I shoot AVCHD with Panasonic cameras. Vegas 8.0c handles it fine on my fastest workstations – Vista 64bit, Quadcore, 8GB ram, internal Raid 0 drive arrays. Hopefully, the upcoming Vegas 9 will do even better!

I have the same problem. Running Vegas 8.0c and 8.1 in Vista 64 bit on (4)different workstations and am unable to zoom in/out with the Microsoft wheel mouse. Driver updates make no difference.

You may want to add an internal raid when building up a PC for AVCHD or other MP4 based streams in Vegas. I just finished building my 4th PC workstation using Vegas 8.0c and 8.1 64bit as the primary NLE. You will experience a smoother workflow if you use the raid as a media drive. With Vista 64bit (Windows 7 is just around the corner), and the right components, AVCHD works pretty good. The Vegas Pro 9 release is also only days away, and I believe Sony claims enhanced performance when dealing with AVCHD and other MP4 based streams. The right motherboard will give you built-in hardware raid control over your raid system. My raid systems consist of (2)internal Sata 750 GB drives with 32 MB cache striped (configured) as raid 0. I back up everything to a separate storage drive through a network. Raid 0 is fast but it’s weakness is that if one of the two drives goes bad, you lose all of the data. For more money there are other raid configurations to consider. You can also speed up your system by using the Western Digital VelociRaptor 10,000 rpm drives in the raid as well as your system drive. Also, one of the new SSD (solid State Disks) used as a system drive deliver very quick seek times. Make sure that the specs on your motherboard allow for at least 16GB of fast, dual channel ram – ram is incredibly cheap now. System tests show quite a performance difference when using a true 64 bit system with a minimum of 8 GB of ram using 64bit capable software. All of these things add up to a susbstantial boost in performance. And, you do not need a Mac to gain this level of performance!

I am not sure of the file structure that your camera encodes onto your SD card, but the AVCHD files that my Panasonic HMC 70 lays down on SD cards has several layers. If I drill down to the actual files that reside in the Stream sub-folder, they can be imported into Adobe CS4’s Project directory. However, some programs cannot find these files unless you give them the entire set of folders that exist on the very first layer of the SD card. An example of this is the Main Concept AVCHD Transcoder (free on the Panasonic and Main Concept sites), that will speedily batch encode AVCHD to Avi 720 x 480 files with choice of anamorphic, letterbox or 4 x 3 edge crop (with a little too much loss of quality, in my opinion).

To add to my original post, I was having a problem adding the AVCHD files into the Media Encoder. I originally tried bringing in (5)files at once,(they are about 1 GB each), and the Encoder freaked. Brought in 2 and then 3 files at once, and all was OK. The MOV Quicktime files, also about 1 GB each, popped right in. They are all taking their turn being encoded as I type this. What I really need to do, however, is line them up on the timeline in Premiere, add a pillar box overlay and a Color Correction FX (the same for all files), and have each one of them batch encoded to SD Mpeg2 Widescreen. Can this be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have built (3)dual boot PCs over the past year – XP and Vista. Except for a couple of older programs, everything runs faster in Vista. We installed either Core 2 Duo or Quad procs and 8 GB of Ram. In fact, Vista has been solid (once SP1 was released). We upgraded to the 64bit release when it became available. I am editing an AVCHD project with heavy effects, and CS4 has worked really well.

Interesting finding, Vince. I have a Matrox APVe Triple Head Display card in one of my studio workstations. Up to this point, when CS4 was released, we have edited most projects with Sony Vegas 8.0c and 8.1 64bit(still buggy). The Matrox third head HDTV out would not work with Vegas. Do you have any knowledge that CS4 might work with this card? Will test and report back.
