Having just upgraded my camcorder to a Panasonic HD model, I note with horror that, according to the Vegas site, Vegas Pro 8 does not support Panasonic AVCHD files. (I have not yet tried to see if this is true)

Does anyone know of a work-around?

The camcorder came with a trial version of Pinnacle Studio Plus (spit!), so can I import using that, then re-import from there into Vegas for editing? I don’t want to have to buy the full version of Studio just to import if I can help it, as I gave up on it some time ago in favour of Vegas.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

    Hi Roger

What you’ll need to get AVCHD files into Vegas is Upshift from Vasst.

    https://www.vasst.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=134&category_id=9&manufacturer_id=2&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=66

Make sure you get the entire link. Otherwise just go to https://www.vasst.com and click on Software. scroll down a bit till you see it.

Hi Allen, When you make your post, there is an icon above the edit box with a blue ‘L’ that is underlined. That will make a hyper-link from the selected text. So in your previous post, you could have typed VASST Upshift, then highlighted it and pressed L and then replace the part that’s between the single quotes in href=’xxxxx’ with the actual link. This would avoid the long link you posted. 😉

Well, Vegas 9 Pro has “Comprehensive AVCHD and HDV Support”. Not sure what the comprehensive really mean… Hopefully it will support AVCHD natively since I’m looking into the HMC150.

I shoot AVCHD with Panasonic cameras. Vegas 8.0c handles it fine on my fastest workstations – Vista 64bit, Quadcore, 8GB ram, internal Raid 0 drive arrays. Hopefully, the upcoming Vegas 9 will do even better!

I just went to a presentation from Panasonic featuring the HMC150 which records to AVCHD. With a lower bitrate, AVCHD has a better image than HDV. So at 17-18Mbps it would actually be superior to the HDV at 25. The HMC150 goes to 21Mbps under certain settings.
