The 64 bit Vista and Raid 0 media drive are a step in the right direction. Your biggest concern now is if your Movie Studio 9 can deal with the HD QT files. You may want to upgrade to Vegas Pro 9. You may also need to install the latest Quicktime on your machine. Once you get the files onto your Raid drive, you will be able to test. The speed of your processor is still another limiting factor. Gotta go, my beer is getting warm!

There is a considerable performance difference between Dual Core and Core 2 Duo.The big question is, which HD format is the company transferring to? This is something you need to know and control before hand. Many pro companies transfer to HD Cam tape. Personally, I feel 2.2 Mhz is a little slow for HD work. If you end up with AVCHD, make sure you upgrade your computer to at least a fast Quadcore (preferably an iCore) with a minimum of 8GB of ram, as well as Vegas to 9.0. In addition, a Raid 0 media drive setup makes a significant difference in playback performance. Good luck!

The prices for high-end components for a state-of-the-art PC are very reasonable right now. You can build or have built an iCore processed powerhouse for much less than a Mac. The key for smooth HD production is the addition of a Raid formatted media drive. Adding an internal raid in Vista 64 or the upcoming Windows 7 is cheap and simple. I just added a 2 Terrabyte raid to two of my workstations over the weekend for $185.00 each. With the imminent release of Vegas Pro 9a update, efficient HD production in the Sony Suite is a no-brainer!

For what it’s worth, I often have 2 or 3 instances of Sony Vegas running at the same time, and they work just fine even on lesser machines. I recently rendered (2)BluRay Mpeg timelines in Vegas while authoring in DVD Architect at the same time. This was on a Quadcore with 8GB of ram running Vista 64. I have been testing/comparing Premiere CS4 recently and do wish Adobe could figure it out! However, Dynamic Link is very cool.

See my previous post answer to another person moving to a new system. There is a pretty good test recently posted by a popular video event magazine running 8GB of ram on a fast PC in a critical test situation. Running an NLE with other demanding apps at the same time, 8 GB seemed to be the amount of ram necessary to standup to the memory demands on newer 64bit systems with 64bit apps.

Consider an internal Sata Raid. I have (2) Sata drives internally striped as Raid 0 (I backup to another complete system)in my studio workstations. AVCHD on the timeline simply plays better in Vegas 8.0c and 8.1. It is cheap and easy to do. I also would consider 8 GB of ram on a 64bit system as minimum.
