If you have not already ordered the Canon, take a look at the Panasonic GH1. I recently purchased two of them. My company works on a wide variety of projects. These cameras are much more video friendly than the Canons, and accept a wide variety of lenses. The standard ‘kit’ lens with auto focus and image stabilizer is actually pretty acceptable at 14-140. The articulating LCD, electronic viewfinder and small size are a plus. There is now a very cool firmware ‘hack’ that is being implemented by many, many users with excellent results. This update enables you to vastly increase the data rate of the camera in 1080 24p, 720p 60fps, AVCHD, Motion JPEG, etc. Google it and you will find the download page and instructions and a huge fan base on both DVX User and Vimeo on the web. Camera prices have recently dropped to $999.00, and the Sigma lens you ordered should work nicely with an available adapter to micro 4/3. Good Luck!

I have used both Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas in a studio situation for many years on a variety of short and long-form projects. After Premiere Pro 2, I solely stuck with Vegas through their current version 9e. I acquired CS4 last year and have completely migrated over to it. No crashes, no problems. I just moved up to CS5 and am in the testing phase with it – so far so good. I do feel that both of these apps are very stable – when used on a properly configured system. I have built all of my edit workstations in 2 working studios over the past 5 years, and have picked out all of the components installed in them. All of our projects for nearly 3 years now are in HD. Premiere demands a powerful system for optimal workflow – there is simply no getting around that!

All of my ‘slide shows’ have been produced in an NLE – Vegas for many years and now Premiere. I have done hundreds of these ranging from as short as 25 images with a single song to multi disc projects with hundreds of images. All of the assets are easily put together in an NLE and ‘camera moves’, music timing, titles, etc. are easily arranged and timed. Just burn the finished project to DVD or, better yet, to BluRay. If you need more flexibility, author more than one video in Encore with a full menu. If CS3 Encore is simply not behaving itself on your current computer, use a simple program like Nero to do the final burn. Good Luck!

Make a list of the following components that will be used in building a new system: case, cooling system, power supply, front input (card readers, etc.), motherboard, hard drives, memory, video display card, additional video/audio cards, other. Don’t skimp on case integrity, cooling (fans) and the power supply – these items lay the foundation for a successful, powerful system. Compare motherboards online and read the user reviews. Look for a board with USB3, as this is the current hot ticket for speed. Intel iCore 7 proc prices have dropped dramatically. Look into a motherboard that can handle dual processors and search online for current comparison speed tests using an NLE for benchmark results. Plan for a minimum of 12GB of fast ram. Add one of the pre-approved Nvidia based video cards from Adobe’s list (there is a hack currently available that will allow you to activate Adobe CS5 for ‘non-tested’ Nvidia cards that will turn on the Mercury Engine that is the heart of CS5. Look for a 10,000 rpm system drive and just use it for the OS – Windows 7. Add 2 (or more) fast seek, large buffer Sata 3 drives as a Raid – stripe these drives together as one big drive as Raid 0 (minimum). Use a hardware raid controller to stripe the drives rather than the software method offered after the install, and preferably, go with an after market one rather than the one built into the motherboard. Add an additional large Sata drive for backup (and use it religiously). Add (2)fast BluRay burners, and, if the budget allows, add an extra external USB3 hard drive for additional safety backup. Install Adobe CS5. GO EDIT!

I recently completed an Encore project using sub titles for an SD project. I had an .scc file created for me by an outside souce from the final audio narration track for use in Closed Captioning. I was unable to edit the file to properly time the text with audio – it was way off. I switched to a Sub Title file provided by the same company and was able to move portions of the text right in Encore so the timing was satisfactory. The disc master burned correctly without a problem.
However, when I tried using the same Sub Title file in a BluRay version of the exact same project, I continually received error messages shortly after initiating the build command. Finally gave up on providing subtitles for the BluRay version. Good Luck!
