The GH1 is very small and lightweight. If you get it with the 14-140mm kit lens (pretty decent, actually), you will not need a ‘heavy duty’ tripod. You might look at (B&H online), the Manfrotto line – the 501 HDV head, in particular. There are a variety of ‘sticks'(legs) that will work with this head. The 701 is smaller, lighter and cheaper, but, depending on how many accessories that you add/connect to the camera, it may be too small for the overall weight. We have (2)GH1 units using the 501, but we usually have the cameras mounted in a ‘rig’ frame with the usual shotgun mic, Samson Zoom H4n audio recorder, wireless mic receiver, LED camera light, etc., connected. If you will be adding heavier, longer lenses, you may want to look at the Manfrotto 293 Tele Lens support. Search online for people using monopods. They can come in handy in certain situations, but make sure to get a tripod first.
The aforementioned Samson Zoom H4n audio recorder is very popular, and sells for around $300.00 U.S. It has built-in stereo mics and allows for (2)additional audio inputs. I send both a wireless mic receiver and a shotgun directional mic into the Zoom which then feeds into the cameras audio input. Yes, you may want to record into the Zoom for decent audio and also into the camera (just as a reference track). Good Luck!

Peter, I have not yet installed the latest hack for my 2 GH1 cameras. Have you had any major issues – freezes, etc. Which settings would you recommend for both 1080 24p and for 720 60p. I am starting on the 2nd part of a motorcycle racing ‘slo mo’ project, and the 720 60p looks like the right choice. Are you able to use SDHC class 6 cards successfully with the new settings? Can you comment on 16 GB card capacity comparing the default Panasonic 60p setting vs. the hack! Any info that you can share would be greatly appreciated, as I am considering the firmware hack install this weekend.

Whatever method you decide to use, test well in advance – and that includes all of the equipment that you will be using for playback. Your a** will be on-the-line in front of all of those people with high expectations. Since you are shooting in HD, test the amount of time it takes to render and burn a BluRay disc – that is if you have a video projector capable of at least 720p. If not, consider h.264 in an HD setting played back from a very capable (and tested) laptop. Newer laptops have HDMI out as well as many rental HD projectors. Good Luck!

Peter, it was beginning to look like this forum should have been named the Canon DSLR Users Forum. I recently decided to buy 2 GH1’s instead of going with Canon. They are working out great fully rigged. I have been following this hack since the day you posted the link to that user group. From what I have seen, it’s implementation looks very impressive. I also saw that Vitaliy is working on getting HDMI out during recording along with manual audio control. Since there are continual daily updates, do you think the firmware is now at a point to install? I know there is much more to come. Your footage, along with others I have seen on Vimeo, shows just how well the upgrade works. Thanks for the post.

How long is the video? Are you sure that Encore is not re-encoding the file that you prepped in Premiere? This can seriously degrade a file already encoded as Mpeg2,

John -You are the man! I followed your steps exactly as you had them listed, and it works! This is not for the feint of heart. Thanks so much for your response. I also purchased a monthly access to lynda.com and viewed the encore cs4 training video tutorials. They are very good but still did not show exactly how to do this procedure. Thanks again.
