Be sure and read Tod’s Adobe info. I put all of the source files (captured video, other video, audio, photos, etc.) for a particular project on my fastest drive – the raid. I also direct my scratch and cache files there. I want the fastest access and playback to any file that I will be using while editing this project. I backup all files to a separate drive, and save all projects to both the raid and the backup drive.

E: This is an empty disk that I can use that is raid 0 with C:
If you stripped Drive C and E together as Raid 0, you should have only one drive letter that represents this, not an empty disc E. Your operating system does not need to be on the Raid 0 setup, but your source files (raw video) should be. Proper Raid setup does make a difference.

Michael, follow this link. I posted a few pics on my ‘test mule’. Ugly, but functional. When it is resting on my shoulders, I can let go with both hands and it stays put – a little chest brace pad, at the sternum, does that. In this particular instance, the Panasonic GH1 DSLR is on the bottom position with the Panasonic TM700 on top. Am using a lightweight tripod for this. Sold the Sachtler and Vinton, but have a bigger Manfrotto if necessary. Cannot use the GH1 wired remote and feed it audio at the same time – same input. Tester 13, the amazing guy that hacked the GH1, is supposedly working on that – what a guy!

I recently designed and built two ‘cages’ out of aluminum alloy, one for each studio location. Did a lot of measuring for ‘adjustability’. I wanted to be able to mount two cameras – 2 DSLRs, 2 small HD video cams, 1 of each, whatever. The rig needed to include 2 shoulder braces (quick release), and have adjustable quick releases for both camera mounts and the rig itself, so that it could be quickly snapped or unsnapped from the tripod for handheld or shoulder mount work. I am in the midst of a motorcycle racing ‘SloMo’ HD project and wanted to shoot with both a powered zoom (small HD cam at 1080p) and a DSLR at medium wide at 720p 60. I shoot the riders coming at me into the turns and powering out to the straights. I am certainly not trying to shoot the whole race, just the dynamics in the turns and occasionally the straights. I am shooting my fourth race next weekend and so far, this setup has worked really well. I now have remote buttons for both cams and the Zoom H4n on the right handgrip with either a wireless lav, shotgun or the Zoom buil-in mics feeding out of it to both camera mic inputs simultaneously. Am getting great footage with this system. Total cost per rig (aluminum, grips, hardware and cold shoe mounts, and heli-arc) was less than $125.00, not including video and audio hardware and my labor.

f you have not already ordered the Canon, take a look at the Panasonic GH1. I recently purchased two of them. My company works on a wide variety of projects. These cameras are much more video friendly than the Canons, and accept a wide variety of lenses. The standard ‘kit’ lens with auto focus and image stabilizer is actually pretty acceptable at 14-140. The articulating LCD, electronic viewfinder and small size are a plus. In it’s un-hacked form, this camera produces a very nice image at 1080 24p. The Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 Aspherical Pancake Lens is highly regarded by those who added it to their collection – nice and low-light for about $335.00. You will not have any short recording times to worry about if you are recording in AVCHD. There is now a very cool firmware ‘hack’ that is being implemented by many, many users with excellent results. This update enables you to vastly increase the data rate of the camera in 1080 24p, 720p 60fps, AVCHD, Motion JPEG, etc. The guru who has figured out the hack is working on getting both real-time video out of the HDM during record mode as well as manual control of the on-board audio. Google it and you will find the download page and instructions and a huge fan base on both DVX User and Vimeo on the web. Camera prices have recently dropped to $999.00, but word is that Panasonic is now only supplying sellers with a ‘new’ firmware release that is un-hackable. Again, Google this and look at Ebay for used ‘hackable, units. Good Luck!

Andy has said it right. CS5 is so far advanced from the old days of 5.1 and 2.0, etc. Adobe has taken a huge step up into the broadcast market in terms of acceptability.

Create a new title in Premiere, copy from your text file version of your subtitle track into the active Premiere title. Drag it to the timeline and place it as a lower-third. You now have an open caption.

Make sure you include at least a Raid 0 media drive. Your playability of HD material will benefit greatly. We backup manually to additional internal and external drives from the Raid. Although a software raid after install works well for most situations, look at adding a quality raid card over using one that may be included with you motherboard. Stripe the drives as a hardware raid during the OS install process. In addition, look for a motherboard with USB3, as this feature will be showing up more and more, and external drives are already selling with it – very fast!
