Optimal drive config for new CS5 system.
I’m building a new system to house CS5, and I’d like to set up the hard drives to the optimal config. I’m planning on a 10,000 RPM SATA system drive, and high capacity, large buffer SATA’s for the rest. What I’d like to know is, what are recommendations or best experiences with drive config, taking into consideration media, paging file, previews, etc., assuming that for the drive issue, money isn’t a problem.

Make sure you include at least a Raid 0 media drive. Your playability of HD material will benefit greatly. We backup manually to additional internal and external drives from the Raid. Although a software raid after install works well for most situations, look at adding a quality raid card over using one that may be included with you motherboard. Stripe the drives as a hardware raid during the OS install process. In addition, look for a motherboard with USB3, as this feature will be showing up more and more, and external drives are already selling with it – very fast!

Thanks John. I’m looking mor for recommendations for drive structure in regards to separate drives for previews, page file, etc. But you bring up an interesting subject. We edit with AVCCAM media, which plays at 3 megs. My non RAID drives read at around 90…so why would I need a RAID? I always thought that RAID speeds were needed for tape capture. Maybe I’m wrong.
