In Log & Transfer or Log & Capture you’ll see a button with a symbol to the left of the audio tracks. There are two lines from it going to 2 tracks such as A2 & A2, A3 & A4, etc. This button determines if the two track will be transferred/captured in mono or stereo.

Do you have one or two tracks coming in? If two, are they linked or unlinked? Have you tried double-clicking one track and changing the pan setting in the Viewer to +1?

The fact that Macs have one hardware controller for multiple FW ports (and the issues that creates) has also been known for years. If you need multiple FW devices to play nicely with each other you need another FW i/o – either in a card slot or express card. As Shane has pointed out, FW800 will be fine for ProRes. If you need more than two streams to play at once, use ProResLT or proxy.

First off, you’ll see the quality difference when you place HD and SD side-by-side, especially as you’re zooming up the SD footage in FCP (which doesn’t resize as well as other apps or hardware). If you can uprez the SD with a hardware solution you’ll at least start with the best quality. As for the image to the sides, place your SD footage on V2. Then on V1 place the same footage (or a graphic background) and stretch, blur, colorize as you wish. The end result will be your SD center with the BKG to the sides.

FCP’s doesn’t do this well. Maybe someone’s out there who better knows how to wrangle FCP more effectively. What I’d do is edit the first sequence and add it to a new sequence where it will become nested. Re-size the nest and place it in a corner or in an area where it won’t be in the way. Then add tracks to the sequence and build your second edit. If you add the tracks below the nest you’ll always see it. When you’re finished, nest all the new tracks, and size, crop and position both nests. If you have to go into one nest to make a change, adjusting the other nest, particularly, if you’ve changed timing is a pain.

Do you have any other FW devices connected at the same time? While Macs may have a number of FW ports, there is only one FW controller. So, often only one device will work. While drives can often be daisy-chained, devices like your mixer may not be happy with any other FW drive connected. Try only connecting the mixer and see what happens.

I think my MBP is one of the first generation. It’s a 17″ model. I’ve cut DVCProHD 720P with it and a FW800 drive with no issues. I’ve not edited with a 15″ model, but it’s probably fine. You can adjust the size of the Canvas to where you want it. I always considered this a rough edit as I wasn’t watching on my broadcast monitor which for me is always the final arbiter of visual goodness. I usually monitored with headphones. If you don’t find one on eBay, just Google it and other options may pop up.

Your video link wasn’t visible, but I think I know what you mean. There are a number of ways to play both simultaneously, but I’d put each sequence on its own track in a new sequence, then reduce each using Size in the Motion tab, move each smaller image side-by-side in the Canvas and you’ll see them play together. It’s probably best to crop at the final stage.

I’d advise against using the auto setting because when the input signal is low it will automatically increase the gain possibly raising the noise level. Where you may be running into trouble is sending a mic-level signal (low) from the wireless receiver to a line-level input (expecting high) on the Zoom. In that case when you raise the gain (volume) you increase the signal, but also increase the hiss. You want to match output and input. So, if you send a mic-level from the receiver make sure the Zoom is set for mic-level in.
