  • We have a beautiful Nikon SD lens sitting on an old Sony camera. I’m hoping to get to AbelCine in the next 2 weeks to see their adaptor in action. Also, a part of their system is the ability to operate the zoom with the remote. I’ll ask why they chose the components they did. I was never thrilled with the Nikon lens in 2X. Maybe in their opinion using 2X degraded the optics. I’ll report back.

ProRes is ProRes422. There are just the 5: Proxy, LT, 422, HQ & 4444. When using Compressor to convert H.264 files from Flips & other cams I always enable Frame Controls which adds time to the encode, but excellent quality as well. LT & 422 both make large files, but LT will be smaller. It’s 102Mbps vs 147Mbps for 422.

I don’t know about Proxy. I’ve never used it. I don’t think it was intended as a high-quality edit codec. It’s more for review purposes. Why not try ProResLT. You’ll get smaller files with excellent quality. However, since you can purchase 1TB drives in the neighborhood of $50, why not use ProRes 422?

May 1, 2011 at 5:03 pm in reply to: Problem with Calibrated MXF Import

There’s an app in the install that will refresh clip lengths that were set when imported using Demo mode. Here’s the procedure from the MXF Import User’s Guide.

    1. Open Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express

    2. Open the project (s)where MXF files are still only showing 30 seconds

    3. Run Calibrated{Q} Import Assist and click on the word „refresh‟ to take you to the refresh page

    4. Do either Option A, or B below:

    Option A:
-Press the Green Double Arrows button to refresh all MXF files in the open projects in Final Cut Pro/Express

    Option B:
    – Press Green Single Arrow with a Search Glass button – then this will open a ‘Choose File Dialog’. – In the ‘Choose File Dialog’, navigate to a MXF File that is only showing 30 seconds in Final Cut Pro/Express and choose it and click ‘Open’

    5. The MXF file duration should now be updated in Final Cut Pro/Express

I just bought a QIO and when researching how it handles SDXC I saw on Sonnet’s site that Mac OS X v10.6.5 is required. It may be that’s the OS version that added SDXC support.

Try using the Timecode Reader filter instead of the Generator. It will show you the source timecode of the clip.

December 20, 2010 at 3:36 pm in reply to: Sync issue…

First, convert the mp3 audio to Linear PCM, 48k, 16 or 24 bit. That’s the audio format FCP wants to see. Then follow Jeremy Garchow’s advice,

“First, delete the new mix out of FCP and your timeline. Set FCP up in a 23.98 easy setup, then quit FCP. Now reopen FCP and reimport your new mix. The file should be in sync.”

  • If the mixer works with only it connected to the FW port, then purchase a FW pci card and use that 2nd FW port with your drive. If the mixer doesn’t connect by itself, then Mackie may be right. What OS are you using?

  • You need to get back to the sequences from which the AIC & ProRes versions were made. Then you can separate the dialog/VO from the mix. Otherwise, you’re in trouble unless you foley all the fx and reacquire the music. That’d be an even larger job.
