Jay, you nailed it. That fixed the problem. In all my years working on Macs, I’ve never seen this happen. Many thanks.

  • Some talent like to hear the original track while doing ADR and others don’t want anything after the beeps. Also, do it in small chunks of dialog. You’ll find some alent have an affinity for ADR, but others don’t. With those, less dialog per cue is best.

If you have AfterFX you can model what Michael suggests by creating a composition that is 5760×1080. Import some footage from the 500 and increase the size until it fills the composition. This will also give you an idea of what quality issues you may have by up-sizing the image. You might consider using a Ki Pro or Nano to record at a higher quality level with full raster. DVCPro HD is thin raster (anamorphic).

  • What NLE did you use for picture edit? Many have audio programs that you can use for ADR. FCP has Soundtrack Pro, Premiere has Soundbooth, etc. You can use the VO Tool in FCP, too. Then you need a decent mic and mic pre and a way to get the signal into your system. If you search the forum you should find a number of suggestions of how to “treat” a room for recording to eliminate hollowness, echo, etc..

What are the four cameras and to what codec and frame size was each set? You can determine codecs and frame sizes that by looking at the clip parameters to the right of the clip name in your bins.

You’re right about price. I planned on using the Ki Pro mini for acquisition, so how the cams record to their cards is less of an issue for me. I think I’ll stay off the bleeding edge on this and see what folks say once they’re released. I’m very interested if there will be new lenses announced for the AF-100.

This is great. I can’t wait to see what Canon has in their back pocket. I canceled an order for an AF-100 about a month or so back because it occurred to me other, similar cameras might be coming, and it’d be crazy to jump too soon, even though I’m a committed Panny user. It’s a great time to be alive!

I usually keep the aspect at 16×9. There was one show where we did a center punch which worked fine since we shot it with the center safely framed. Our workflow when going directly from HD to SD DVD is to export a self-contained QT at current settings from the timeline. Then, that’s imported to Compressor where the mv2 and ac3 files are encoded. I also use BitVice a lot to encode the mv2s. We use DVDSP to author the DVDs and the 16:9 Pan-Scan & Letterbox Display Mode so the DVD Player will show the video as 16×9 on widescreens and letterboxed on 4×3 sets.

I, too, have had excellent results encoding HD to a DVD with Compressor. However, if I need a SD file I use my Kona 3 to downconvert and send its SDI out to an AJA IO connected to another computer where I capture the SD. That also works great.
