Hi, Rafael. A few months ago I took out the small 100GB drive from my MBP (3 or 4 years old now) and replaced it with a 320GB drive. When I tried to install SL using the MBP’s DVD drive, it always froze. Then I put my MBP in Target mode and connected it to an iMac with the installer drive in the iMac. I pointed the installer at the MBP drive and it worked. BTW, I like your new picture.

I’m no expert, but I think the issue is you can’t partition the startup drive from itself. But, if you put the new laptop in Target mode (hold the “T” button while starting up)while connected to another Mac with Firewire, the laptop will look like any drive on the other computer’s desktop and you should be able to partition it.

In our MacPro we have one drive with two partitions – one for SL and the other with Lion. We’ve had no problems running either OS. We have partitioned other drives that had an OS on them and the OS runs fine after the partitioning.

Are there any gaps between clips in the timeline. If so, try filling them with Slug. Gaps can cause audio and video to become unsynced.

October 6, 2011 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Car Shoot Inspiration

One thing I’ve found that helps sell the composite is to be sure to have subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) motion imparted to the actors in the car. We’ve done that with a couple of grips shaking/jogging the car on the stage while the actors are inside. Another thing is to shoot the background plates before the greenscreen scene. Then, you can have the actors lean slightly one way or the other so their physical action is in sync with the background plate. That way, you avoid seeing a turn in the plate, but no one in the car reacts properly. Also, when compositing, think about moving reflections of branches/leaves/light poles/etc. across the surfaces of the car that may be seen.

The biggest issue we’ve found with remote desktop-like software is the audio either isn’t there at all, or is out of sync. It’d be great if that could be brought together.

Our NovoFlex Nikon adaptor “doubles the focal length”as expected. We’ve had it about 6 months, so maybe there’s a new version. BTW, old Nikon glass looks great connected to the AF100.

There is file transfer software that greatly speeds up internet transfers. We regularly download 6GB files from clients on the west coast who use Aspera. With an Aspera client, we can download that file in as quickly as 30 minutes using a 30mbps cable modem at our end.

Shoot on green and composite any background you like. You have complete control of the look.
