  • FCP Audio Problem-weird delay

My scratch track stereo audio is V1 and V2, my sound effects take up V3 and V4as well as V5 and V6. My system is plenty fast enough to playback uncompressed, or even ProRes 720p projects but my audio sometimes starts off echo’ing then about 1/2 way through it stops and the right channel is playing correctly but the left channel is delayed about 1 second and sounds like slow-mo. This is even after a render. But the next time the audio screw ups will be totally different. I have no filters or effects on my audio either.

Specs: I have a broadcast 720p project in Motion that I exported as ProRes 720p 29.97 and dropped into FCP. There I have various still images overtop the video layer. I have one scratch audio track recorded through my Intensity Pro card and Mackie 1202 using the Capture now window with video off and only capturing audio.

Note: Another of our people here have had similar issue in the past with multiple audio tracks and edits, essentially layering the audio over and over again. This created a delay and played back audio where there wasn’t supposed to be any. Weird and very similar to my issue. We can’t figure this one out.

Has anyone come across this before or possibly have any solutions?

If you haven’t, do an Audio Mixdown: Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown.

Do you mean by Command Option R or actually exporting audio to AIF and re-importing into seqeunce, thus taking my 6 layers of audio down to 2?

I’ve actually tried both methods and still the same issue. Echo is beginning is gone but 1/2 way through the audio is repeating itself. Again, audio is playing where there is no audio. Even when waveforms are showing nothing there, its playing. So weird.

Also, odd note, when I re-created this sequence in SD using ProRes, and tested and re-recorded my scratch track using our HVX-200 camera and everything works just fine. Same audio sound effects and all. So I don’t know if it was the audio recorded in FCP with Capture Now or not. All sample rates and frame rates match too. Playback is screwy.

I meant Command Option R. If you haven’t, try trashing prefs and repairing permissions. What kind of drives are you using and how are they connected to your Mac?

I have a Ciprico Media Vault 5 drive setup and configured as RAID 0. Connected via fiber channel. I’ve been digging around and found others having the same problem and with unanswered posts. Link to thread here:

I’ll try the prefs and permissions thing now.

I’m having the same problem, with an SD sequence. I’ve tried deleting render files and doing the option-apple-R mixdown, with no luck. it seems totally random. The weird thing is that the delay doesn’t happen at the same time every time. I might play the sequence once and have it happen in one place, but then go back and play it again and it happens in another place. so it seems to be some sort of system problem, rather than a problem with a specific render file or capture file. why does this happen? I guess it could be a slow disk, but it’s not like I switched to a different drive. I’ve been editing with this same drive for a couple years now. I haven’t changed anything about my system for many months.

btw, deleting prefs and fixing permissions seems like superstition that everyone says to do for any problem but rarely helps (in my 9 years of experience using FCP). What i’d like to know, if possible, in general and in this specific case, is what really causes the problem. So… any more ideas?

    Thank you,

    steev

    Hey,
I too have this problem and so far have not found a solution to it online, however, I have a temporary fix which at least allows me to playback my edited footage in fcp without being disturbed by this nuisance. in system prefs -> sound -> output switch the balance to just left or just right. I know this is by far not ideal but has helped me a lot and is the best I could think of for now…
This is my very first post, hoped it helped someone.
    Cheers
    Mike

Are there any gaps between clips in the timeline. If so, try filling them with Slug. Gaps can cause audio and video to become unsynced.

It might just be the blackmagic card. I’ve been having the same troubles and it’s been making me insane! I have audio mixes coming back to me with everything on point on the mixer’s end, but it’s been making me CRAZY trying to figure out this sync issue. What was the last update you did on the for the Intensity card?

I have the same problem. Exactly the same. And I also have the BlackMagic. Maybe that´s the problem.
