That might be related to your squelch setting. I don’t have my G3 handy to check, but I believe you can adjust the squelch sensitivity.

If you can’t switch the cam to a line input, you”ll need a pad to lower the gain to mic level. Markertek has good pricing and lots of choices. Getting a pad with switchable amounts of reduction gives you more flexibility. If you’re handy you can make a pad yourself. Google to find simple plans.

In a way you’re at the mercy of the board op since you don’t know if he’ll suddenly raise the gain out of the board, thereby, causing the audio to clip (distort) because it’s too loud. One of the advantages of having a mixer between you and the board is many have limiters that act to prevent clipping from happening.

Depends on the mic. Dynamics should work, but condensers that need phantom power won’t, unless they have an external power supply (or a mixer supplying phantom power). All that’s assuming the camera is looking for mic level inputs not line level. What camera are you using?

That freaked me out the first time. Someone here suggested using 1080psf23.98 and that’s been working fine with no issues. The above explanation makes sense.

Excellent plugins from CoreMelt, although, there are currently somre weirdness with FCPX. $79 to $199,

I think BDRs are a good option. I don’t use them because my projects range in size from 100GB to 250GB, so putting them onto BDRs is a lot of effort. As to your question about what to archive, I archive everything – MXFs & media made from them. Also, I archive all QuickTime export masters. I don’t always archive Renders. Archiving XMLs is ok, but you need to archive the media they reference or they can’t recreate projects, etc. At least I think that’s the way it works.

The tower is, but it’s such a job to upgrade clean and then reinstall everything that I’ve resisted it. If new Mac Pros come out soon, they’ll come with ML. Otherwise, I’ll eventually do the upgrade.
