You’re right about ML. I have it on my MBP and I have almost no problems while running it. I just started using Cocktail which seem to be an excellent maintenance program. I run it every other day on the MacPro. One of the actions it takes is repairing permissions.

Understood. Our clients program’s rarely have more than a five-year life so HDDs work for that. That said, I have drives from the mid to late 90s that still work fine. I don’t throw them away. You never know. I’ve looked at tape systems, but I can’t justify the cost, although, prices seem to be dropping.

I, too, see the works one day, not so good the next behavior. In my case I think most of it relates to project unhappiness. Just today after being happy for 6 hours, everything went nuts. After Disk Warrior & Repair Permissions, I made a new project and copied the problematic one into it. Then, all was well. Another thing I’m seeing a lot is long permission repairs. With FCP7, I never saw as many lines of processing in the repair permissions window. Don’t know if it’s a Lion or FCPX thing.

Use MD5 Checksum for the strongest verification. And backup to a 2nd drive if you don’t have a mirrored drive. ShotPut will do that, too. We backup to a mirrored drive and a 3rd drive as well. After all these files are your masters.

I’ve been archiving to hard drives for years. What I like most about that is if I have to make a revision, often I can do it on the archive drive without transferring all the data back to my edit drive. I also backup my edit drive daily to a 6TB G-Tech drive. If a particular project is very important, I also back it up to a second drive.

I’ve tried deleting them, but FX Factory re-creates them the next time FCPX starts up. Just disable the effects as Bret suggests above.

Davinci Resolve comes with the Blackmagic camera. Shooting RAW you’ll have 13 stops of latitude. Using Resolve you can automstically track as many objects in the frame as you like and have unique grades for each. This involves post production time, but gives you tremendous creative freedom.

How is your hard drive formatted? The 4GB limit implies it may be FAT32, as that’s the file size limit for that formatting.

Do you have an ATT mobile phone? If so, it may be interfering. I heard periodic interference when recording with a U87 mic. I was afraid there was a problem with the mic. Someone mentioned the ATT issue and the next time it cropped up sure enough the talent had an ATT mobile. We switched it off and the interference was gone. Then I started hearing what sounded like weak radio transmissions. I installed in-line RF filters on the mic lines and that interference went away. Good luck Finding interference sources is like finding water leaks. They can come from anywhere.

When I’m working off a shortlist (which is most of the time), not only do I do a verified transfer from cards to my backup drives, I also playback a few seconds of every clip on one of the drives and check that all shots on the list are actually on the drives. On one shoot a couple of years ago a number of takes from a scene never made it to the cards or drives. Fortunately I had plenty of coverage, but after that we added the step of checking the drives against the shortlist.
