December 17, 2005 at 5:50 pm in reply to: Music Video sync playback in the field

When you edit, you’ll be able to easily get music sync by listening to the original track in your timeline and sliding the field recording until the music syncs up. It’s in sync when all you hear is some phasing. Of course, as Matte said, a lot depends on talent’s ability to perform in sync. However, syncing up the music will probably get you in the ballpark, even if talent is off. Then, slip the video a bit until it looks right.

Checkout https://audacity.sourceforge.net/ They have both Mac and PC versions. I don’t know if it will talk to the card, but it’s free and worth a try.

I’ve never tried this in FCP, but what about creating a black solid in PhotoShop and putting it under your reduced image layer (but over the background). Make it the same size as your image then offset it right and down and you have a drop shadow. You could also affect its opacity, although, that might cause a render. Just a thought.

December 16, 2005 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Voiceover tool not working with AJA Io

Unfortunately, if the AJA is engaged by FCP you can’t also use it for the VO tool. You have to use another audio input device. If you have any other core audio compliant card or box, you can use that. I had a digital i/o device with optical in and out and was able to plug that to my G5s digital i/o and use it. I’ve seen other posts that suggest using a DAT or CD or DVD recorder that have optical outs as the interface.

Send your mixer’s out to the DAT (or whatever) in and take the DAT optical out to the G5. Then select built-in digital as your input in the VO Tool.

Of course, you could buy an inexpensive core audio compliant M-box, Edirol or other interface box that will do the same thing. I’d suggest one that has a USB interface and not firewire, since the firewire might conflict with the AJA (which also uses firewire). Once installed you’d see that box appear in your i/o choices in the VO Tool.

December 11, 2005 at 9:05 pm in reply to: 5.1 Audio to DVD – Yes/No?

I’ve just started with FCP Studio 5 and while I did a practice ac3 encode with compressor, it was for a stereo track. I’m guessing that using Compressor in FCP Studio 5 to make ac3 tracks is similar to apack with FCP 4.5.

In apack you need all 6 separate tracks that comprise the 5.1 signal. It seems as if these have been supplied to you. They are probably labeled as to their 5.1 position (left, center, right, etc.).

You open apack and tell it you’re encoding a 5.1 track. It will open up with places for all your audio tracks. You simple drag the appropriate track from your finder to the corresponding box in apack. See the Ken Stone article for clarification:

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/a_pack_warmouth.html

After you’ve laid out your tracks and adjusted the relevant parameters (448kbps, dialog norm -31, and Film Compression off) click Encode, tell it where to put the file and you’re done. You just marry the resulting ac3 audio file with the mv2 file of the video in DVDSP (or other DVD app) and you’re done.

December 9, 2005 at 3:47 pm in reply to: Voice Over Tool – Monitoring audio

How are you monitoring the FCP audio? Are you using a mixer? Can you simultaneously monitor the mic?

The way I do it is to monitor the mic channel on my mixer at the same time I monitor the FCP playback on the mixer. I don’t think (although, I’m not 100% sure about this) that you can hear the VO tool out of FCP while recording. You have to set up a way to send the mic only to the VO tool input without the FCP playback (mix minus).

I think I found out what was causing the trouble with the Panther drive. I had changed its name to include “Panther.” When I changed it back all was well. I can boot from that drive or the Tiger drive.

How are you monitoring your audio? Out of the computer, a card, an external box?
