Thanks for the incredibly complete answer. Apparently, there was a Canopus product that would output video to a monitor while it played in Pro Tools LE in earlier versions. I’m trying to run down if it works with the new version. I hope so. Also, it appears that by using a midi timecode to SMPTE box (MOTU TImepiece AV)everything can be synced and frame accurate timecode can be output (and input). I’ll report back when I get definitive answers.

Ty, do you have a way of outputing the video that plays during a Pro Tools session to an external video monitor for ADR? What about SMPTE?

It’s unfair to point fingers about “plants.” While I don’t know any of the folks in this thread personally, I’ve seen their posts and interactions with others over the last couple of years and none are riding bandwagons. It would have been enough to simply mention the Cinesycn option. I for one hadn’t heard of either product. Thanks for the info. I will checkout Cinesync.

I’m thinking about adding Pro Tools LE + the Digi 002 Rack for compatibility with other studios. Have you heard of any issues running PT and FCP on the same machine. I thought I read something about this a while back, but my searches haven’t turned up any info.

I use Crown PZMs. They work very well. I tape them to the table which seems to improve their performance. I space them about 4 feet apart down the middle of the table. You can experiment to find the best locations. The Crown’s I have come with an in-line box that works as a battery power supply or interface when you use phantom power. It has XLRs in and out. I’ve never done it, but you should be able to plug them into a wireless pack. You’d need to have the correct cable for that, though.

Timecode is usually not recorded on an audio track of the camera master, although, it can be done that way. Most cameras or decks have a separate timecode track. When you capture the video (and audio) the timecode is also captured. The trick is to make sure that the same timecode is recorded on your DAT. That way, when you capture the audio from the DAT it’s in sync with the video.
If you didn’t record timecode on the DAT that was synced to the timecode on the camera, you’ve got a big job ahead. Did you use a timecode slate or sticks at the head of each scene? If not, hopefully you had a camera mic open. That way you can put the camera audio on one channel of your edit timeline and the DAT audio on another and then slip the DAT audio until it’s in sync with the camera audio. You may still have to slip the track a frame or two, one way or the other, to achieve lipsync depending on whether there was any appreciable delay between the camera mic and your boom(?) mic. Hopefully, once in sync, the audio will remain that way for as long as you rolled tape on a given scene. If the audio falls out of sync, trim it and pull it back into sync. Good luck.

As long as you don’t clip the signal you won’t add more distorsion. As you raise the overall level of the signal you’ll also raise the level of any noise that’s in the program. You can use Soundtrack Pro or SoundSoap (there are other noise reduction programs, too) to remove certain noise like hum, rumble and broadband hiss. However, you are stuck with any distortion that’s in the signal. You can try rolling off the high end a little bit to de-emphasize the distortion, but that will also affect the “brightness” of the program.

Checkout Streamclip. https://www.squared5.com/ It’s amazing. You can convert from muxed files on a DVD to QT (I used 8-bit uncompressed), edit in fcp, and re-encode with excellent results. I just had to do this where a client only had their DVD as a master and the results were great.
