Microphone for recording a conference or group
I recorded a group of about 5 people sitting around in a semi cirlce talking
I used a good shotgun mic which did a decent job except the person directly in front of the mic sounded a lot better than those off to the sides.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for recording a , say, large group around a conference table? -

You might give a PZM a try.

When I got my Marantz PDM660, it came with 2 boundry mic’s. Those are absolutely great for exactly your purpose. Recording a conference at a table.

I went to the B&H website and saw there were a variety of boundary mics. Based on your experience with your mics, how do you place them? How well do they do covering a conference where some people are closer to the boundary mic than others? Does yours cover a 360 pattern? Do they have wireless versions? Do they have canon XLR connectors?

I use Crown PZMs. They work very well. I tape them to the table which seems to improve their performance. I space them about 4 feet apart down the middle of the table. You can experiment to find the best locations. The Crown’s I have come with an in-line box that works as a battery power supply or interface when you use phantom power. It has XLRs in and out. I’ve never done it, but you should be able to plug them into a wireless pack. You’d need to have the correct cable for that, though.

They work good. they’ll pick up everyone at the table. Long table? Use 2. Cannon CLR’s? Don’t know Cannon but they have standard XLR’s and plug into my PDM660

You need more than one mic. I like the Audio Technica PZM mics and automixer combo and the Shure FP410 automixers.
Gotta be careful about table thumpers and paper movers, but that’s typical.
You can sometimes zone the mics, setting one between two people, but the further away you get from the mic, the worse it gets.
The automixers make a big difference, they lower the mics not being spoken into.
