We use a Duel Adaptor to off-load P2s to a hard drive connected to a MBP. Maybe there’s a pcmcia to usb adaptor. Or get a USB card to install in the G4 so you can connect the 500 to it.

The is a restoration tool that can probably remove the bumps under dialogue. It’s rather amazing. Check out:
https://www.izotope.com/products/audio/rx/ I bought it for our Pro Tools system as soon as I checked out the demos on the site.

August 2, 2008 at 11:31 pm in reply to: Mics & Non-Professional Talent / Crown PZM

This reminds me of a story I heard while touring backstage at NBC in New York when I was a kid. It was about a famous opera singer at the inception of radio broadcasting who had a very bad case of mic fright. The solution was to hide the mic inside a lamp shade. Apparently, the singer had no trouble singing to the lamp shade. Go figure!

I’ve tried click removal software in Pro Tools and it doesn’t work well. Most of the time removing mouth noises is a manual job. It’d be easier to do it in an audio editor than video. Just make sure you don’t pull the ends of the edit together. This will cause the audio to go out of sync. Replace the noises with room tone so the overall length of the audio isn’t changed.

As Ty mentioned, it’s probably the sample rate. If you record with 44.1k sample rate and import that into a video edit workstation, the workstation will probably assume the audio is 48k (the normal rate for video). That would account for a sync issue. Just a thought.

You can set TOD. Open the smaller door under the LCD display and you’ll see the TCG switch. It allows you to set tc and then free-run or rec run. There are also the buttons to set the tc. The HPX500 also outputs the tc so another cam or deck can jam that tc or vice versa.

  • I’ve had success matching by both using the same mic as was used outside, but also pointing it at talent the same way as outside. Usually, the mic is on a boom shooting down from above. If your recording space is adding a “sound,” trying outside as Ty suggests might help, but watch out for environmental sounds that might not match. It’s also very important that talent performs the same way as during the original shoot, so it’s important to be able to playback that performance. I’ve done a number of ADR sessions for features and network TV shows when their actors were in my area and didn’t have time to get into NYC. Interestingly, they all have specified a U87 as the studio mic.

I’ve never seen anything like that, but you can make your own and save them to the SD card for easy recall.

Here’s an excellent article on encoding practice with some interesting surprises. It’s definitely worth reading.
