Audio Sync
I used to have an H4 audio voice recorder and now have a Sony
ICD-MX20. I’d like to use the Sony to record back up audio with my Camcorder.
However, both of these named recorders record the sound slightly out of sync with the camcorder sound. Every 5 minutes or so I have to split the audio track and adjust the sony audio track.
Does anyone know why this happens and if it can be corrected so that the voice recorder remain in Sync?

Hello John and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,
Drift is due to slight differences in the sample rate clocks.
In order to get really good sync, the devices need to be driven from the same clock.
You might get lucky with two devices, you might not.

As Ty mentioned, it’s probably the sample rate. If you record with 44.1k sample rate and import that into a video edit workstation, the workstation will probably assume the audio is 48k (the normal rate for video). That would account for a sync issue. Just a thought.

Actually, what I meant was even among devices supposedly running at the same sample rate, one will frequently be slightly higher than the other. That’s why word clock was developed.

Thank you for all your responses. I did check the sample rates. They were at 44.1 both on the cancorders and the Sony voice recorder.
It is interesting that the Canon HG10, HV20, Sony HC1 and V1 all stay in sync. The Voice recorder does not.JK

Yes, well the audio shot with the video should stay in sync.
The problem is audio only recorders.
