Not sure about the 23.97. 23.98 is short hand for 23.976. You’ll see 23.98 and 23.976 used interchangeably.

There’s a lot of discussion about this. Search around and you’ll find it. There’s a thread below with some info:

Compressor 2.3 can convert avi to whatever. It’s the last version I had with FCP 5.1.4. Also version 3.0.5 works, too. I didn’t have an avi with the audio characteristics you have, but compressor didn’t choke on the avi file I fed it. So try Compressor and see what happens. And you can run batches, too.

There are a lot of posts about off-loading P2 cards to a hard drive. With a MBPro, FW800 mirrored RAID drive and Duel adaptor we can offload with Shotput P2 a 16GB card without verification in about 8 minutes and 12 minutes with. If you have a dedicated person to do those transfers, that could work. Although, you might want to rent two more cards to give you some breathing room. After the cards are transferred AND verified, you can format them and plug them back into the 500 and keep rotating cards.

Just be sure to verify each offload. We actually play a few seconds of each offloaded clip with HD Log even after Shotput verifies. If you do something wrong you’ve lost your footage.

All I know for sure is if the audio isn’t 48kHz it will have to be rendered. I’m not sure about the 32-bit. FCP wants a 16 or 24-bit depth. See if your conversion program allows you to set bit depth to 16 or 24 and 48k and see what happens.

Also, I’m not sure FCP likes mpeg-4. I’d try converting to DV or DVCPro50 and see what happens.

January 5, 2009 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Video keying

Perhaps you could use a morph plugin, but that would probably distort your image. Georgia is sort of vertical and video is horizontal. If you shoot your footage so the important stuff is centered inside GA then the matte approach should work. Rather than squeeze the footage into the matte, the matte could shrink onto the footage.

All your ideas are good. My only suggestion is to get the lav as close to the mouth as possible. An alternative might be to use a head mic that would place the mic even closer to the mouth. The louder the voice is to the mic, the lower any ambient sounds will be.

Do you have more than one device plugged into the FW port – including both 400 & 800. If so, try removing it. I had an issue with my G5. I had an AJA IO connected thru the FW400 port and a hard drive connected thru the FW800 port. The drive wasn’t recognized until I removed the IO. Pn the G5 the two flavors of FW interact. I don’t know if that’s true with the MacPro.

It’s possible the lastclip file is missing or corrupted. Checkout Shane’s Stock Answer #38 at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/fcp_faq3.php

Raylight for Mac might also offer an alternative way to import your files to FCP. https://dvfilmstore.com/raylight-for-mac.html
