  • There’s a connector or patch point where the low and high signals are reversed giving you a 180 degree phase shift. It’s a pain running that down. A quick fix would be to take one of your outputs and use a mult in your patchbay to send it to both inputs of your deck. If that preoduces an out of phase result, then one of the cables to the deck has reversed XLR pins 2 & 3.

If the source is QT files just try to Import the files. You don’t need to transfer or capture. You may need to copy the files to your external capture scratch drive before importing them.

  • It’s always best to edit with just one codec. While FCP will render a codec different from the sequence setting, the results aren’t always great. Either convert one to the other or both to, say, prores. Compressor can do the best conversion, but do some research on the COW for the specific procedures. Once you’ve done that and have it all tidy in your sequence you can easily export a QT movie.

  • Before your shoot, take one of the cameras into the gym, place someone at the speaker position and walk to each camera position and see if you can get the shoot you need. Then you know for sure. Whenever I scout a location I always take a camera to confirm I can get the shots I need.

There’s now a Keylight plugin for FCP. It’s another excellent keyer. https://www.thefoundry.co.uk/pkg_overview.aspx?ui=76B1D869-EA48-4D89-8F13-FDE18802BCF8

Shotput’s easy to use. Basically, you tell it what to name the folders that store the data, and after that it creates new folders for each new card and increments the folder number automatically. You also point Shotput at the drives where you want the data stored. When you plug a P2 card into the Duel, ShotPut recognizes it. You check the box next to the NO NAME P2 card and tell Shotput to Begin Offload. Make sure you have File Contents Verification slected. That takes more time than File Size Comparison, but it’s a truer verification. After the transfer, our video engineer always plays a couple of seconds of each clip in the captured folder to make sure both the audio and video are there. I’m somewhat anal about that (even with the verification).

There have been posts about Duels breaking. We’ve had one about 2 years and no problems, If you’re careful with it and not let it dangle off the desk it should be fine. That said, we carry a second one in our kit as we don’t want our shoot shut down if it fails. We also carry a second drive besides our Raid0 and use Shotput to offload to both.
