I don’t encode flvs this way. However, I suggest you set the crop as you’re doing and then, enter the final size you want for your flv in the resize window (for example, 480×270).

As Mark mentioned above the most critical element (besides properly lighting the green screen) is the color space of the camera. A 4:2:2 color space is preferable to a 4:1:1. The more color information available to the keyer, the better the key will be. That said, you can pull a good key with 4:1:1, it’s just a little bit harder and more involved.

You don’t say how you intend to edit your programs. Your choice of NLE may affect your choice of camera (rented or purchased). FCP as an example, isn’t happy with files from some of the lower-end cameras. They can be imported, but in some cases it really slows the workflow.

I think you’re making this harder than it should be. Stay in a standard Easy Setup – HDV 1080i as you’ve done. Size your art to fit that size. When you are finished with your edit export it with current settings and then encode the flv with the final cropped size you want. You’ll need to allow room in your 1080 frame so it can be cropped properly.

On another subject, the dimensions of your flv should be divisible (optimally) by 16 or 8. The encoded results will be much better.

As you are scaling the image, you might try turning on frame controls in Compressor’s Inspector and choosing Best in the scaling quality setting. Hopefully that will help. BTW, how are you monitoring?

I think you’re stuck with this effect. It’s why professionals never wear clothes with tight patterns on-camera. You can try applying blur to decrease the moire. You can use Color, create a user shape, apply blur to it, and track it, so the blur only affects the shirt and not the rest of the frame. Maybe someone else has a trick that would help. I don’t think the thin raster of HDV contributes much to the problem. It’s the pattern on the shirt.

Up until a version (or so) ago, Flash Player would only play flv codecs. Then Adobe incorporated the h.264 codec and the flv extension could be attached to those files (change .mov to .flv). So now, you can use Compressor to make h.264 files that will be play in Flash Player. At the same time, you can use external encoders to do the same. I have not read about or seen comparisons of h.264 encodes vs. flv encodes, but I suspect the quality would be similar with the proper choices of encoding parameters. Perhaps a post in the Compression Techniques forum would provide you more detailed information.
