crop for custom web size
My final product will be a 450×350 flv.
I have backgrounds that are sized at 450×300 built in photoshop.
I have 1440 x 1080 footage, talking head keyed out.In fcp i set my sequence to a custom size 450×300, but it appears to be stretched with extra width.
I pull in my artwork make sure it’s scaled to 100 percent and then I can really see that the sequence is stretched, it’s wider than the art. Place my footage without changing sequence settings.How come I can’t constrain my sequence to 450×300? I tried a test creating a 450×450 sequence and that creates a perfect square, so I can’t figure out why it’s not adding the extra width in that case?
EDIT : woops i but 350 on my drawing below, I ment 300.

You’re not working in FCP the way things are meant to work Mateo, in fact you are working completely backwards, and this is why things are not working properly for you.
You must create and edit your FCP projects using standard video dimensions, and only when you are done, then you resize to the final dimensions required for the Web. Does this make sense?

Because the pixel aspect ratio isn’t square. If you make the sequence with square pixels it will be correct.

I guess that’s also true Tom.
I guess as a broadcast editor I’m biased toward resizing after completing editing in a known video standard.

I would probably do it your way, but some people find it easier to do like this when they’re working with these odd sizes and different types of media.

I think you’re making this harder than it should be. Stay in a standard Easy Setup – HDV 1080i as you’ve done. Size your art to fit that size. When you are finished with your edit export it with current settings and then encode the flv with the final cropped size you want. You’ll need to allow room in your 1080 frame so it can be cropped properly.

On another subject, the dimensions of your flv should be divisible (optimally) by 16 or 8. The encoded results will be much better.

Thanks for the great info guys! I just edited a test in a 1080i60 sequence, exported it and resized and cropped the clip when I encoded. That was a lot easier. Only 115 more to go.
