    I don’t know that camera or the workflow, but when FCP starts acting strangely trash your prefs and repair permissions.

    It’s possible your Device Control Preset is set to something like HDV Firewire Basic when it should be HDV Firewire Basic NDF (Non-Drop Frame). If you search the Cow for drop frame you’ll find an explanation of what it is and the difference from non-drop frame. Wikipedia would also be a good place to look.

    Usually, this is related to drive speed. I’m not sure why you’re using ProResHQ with SD. It’s only recommended for grater than 1080×1920 resolutions like 2K and up. The data rate of HQ is high. If your drive is getting full or experiencing problems ro both, that could be what’s going on. Check the drive speed with AJA System Test and see if it’s enough to handle HQ.

    How big are the jpegs? I’ve never seen this. If you don’t get a fix for importing them correctly, you can use Paste Attributes to fix many clips at once. Place your clips on a timeline. Manually rotate the first clip. Then copy (Cmd-C) that clip. Select the remaining clips and Paste Attributes (Opt-V) When the dialog box opens, check Basic Motion (in Video Attributes)and OK. The selected clips should all rotate to the vertical position. You can also change the scale in the same way. Just adjust the scale in the first clip and it’ll be applied to everything along with the rotation.

    While it’s fine to use the Animation codec in a sequence for keying, the sequence should be in a different codec like ProRes. If you are editing in a sequence set to the DV codec the quality degradation is probably because of that limited codec. On export, you’re turning all your high-quality graphics into DV.

    You can also try Mixdown Audio: Sequence menu > Render Only > Mixdown. This renders your audio mixing it down according to how you have it in your sequence. All your files stay put. It just takes a lot of overhead off the processor so the audio plays more reliably.
