While USB is okay for file transfer, it’s not okay as a video edit drive. That might change with USB3. That said, look to your left and right on the Cow and you’ll see adds from drive manufacturers. Some have Firewire drives. All the advertisers are reputable companies who stand behind their products.

FCP wants to see audio files as Linear PCM, 48kHz, 16or 24 bit. As Sam suggests, use an external app to convert your mp3 audio to the above.

I’ve not worked with either camera’s media, but check the clip’s Item Properties in the Browser and see if the Anamorphic box is checked. If not, try checking it.

It’ll work fine. But make sure you back up the RAID externally as you have no protection with RAID 0. You can format RAID 5 with 3 drives. That’s be a safer approach.

If you have AfterFX there is an effect called Audio Waveform. You can use it to super a waveform over the video or create a clip you can super over another clip. It gives you a lot of control over the size and shape of the waveform. It looks to me that it might do what you want, but you’d have to try it with the actual sound to make sure it’s actually drawing the correct waveform. Motion has some audio generators that might work.

I don’t capture the way you do and don’t monitor with the computer’s speakers so I’m not sure what to tell you about sound from the camera vs the Mac. Look through the capture parameters – maybe in the Easy Setups – to see if there are monitoring choices. Look in the Mac’s System Pref’s Audio tab and see if you have a choice of sound output there.
