Use Compressor to first convert your footage to ProRes. Then your edits will go smoothly without all the re-rendering.

Another possibility is CoreMelt’s Pass Colour effect. It’s a part of their Pigment package. You’d invert the effect to desaturate a selected color.

Every time we offload a P2 card to a drive we use HD Log to play every clip on the card for a few seconds to confirm it’s okay. Get in the habit of checking your data every time it’s moved. After all, it’s your master. Ans backup, too.

Walter’s advice is excellent. Another thing to look at whether using the iMac or MacPro is that Compressor and AfterFX are setup properly to use multiple cores.

I’m not sure about the general error or the apparent lack of filters. Maybe trashing prefs and repairing permissions will help. As for the beeping, that happens when FCP doesn’t like the audio format. Always convert any audio to Linear PCM, 48kHz, 16 or 24 bit in an external editor before bringing it into FCP. You can use,Quicktime Pro, Soundtrack Pro, MPEG Streamclip or any other program that can convert audio.
