September 11, 2006 at 1:09 pm in reply to: Importing MXF Files From a Panasonic P2 CardDoes anyone have any experience using a third party application to convert MXF-files to edit in Premiere Pro? I’m shooting a project in DVCPRO50, MXF-format, and wondering if I should go for the windows approach, or just surrender and do the editing in Final Cut.

Can you record sound with a bluetooth headset?

Hehe, read about that. I’ve actually seen several cell phone productions being mentioned in the news lately. For the purpose of visual style, you’ll certainly get a distinct look on your footage. But if visual style is the only argument, I think I’d prefer a “better” platform, and instead mess it up in post 😉
On the other hand, for the purpose of directing and acting, I guess this extreme run’n’gun style shooting could help enhance “felt realism” for the actors on the set.
It must look kind of funny if you’re an innocent bystander watching this one guy with the cell phone chasing this other guy with the toy gun.

Have the clients suggested any price range that is realistic for them to want to spend on this?
I sometimes have clients who want my services, but have a limit on what they can spend on the project. In those cases, provided I actually want to do the job, it’s not just a matter of asking “how much do I need to cover all my expenses in addition to my own salary?”, instead I have to ask myself “how much can I do for my client with this money?”. In these cases, you basically have to find out how you can solve your client’s problem, within your client’s budget. And if you can’t you’re either turning them down, or working for free 🙂
Otherwise, I think Frank Otto has it all covered pretty well. You really need to establish your own role in all of this, and you need to research the market in your area.
About putting a price tag on the equipment you own. I find it helpful to just set up a private price list for renting my equipment, that somehow matches the market price for renting this kind of equipment in my area. I then just use calculate this price into the total cost of the project. So even if I own the equipment, I theoretically rent it off myself, effectively assuring I get paid for the wear and tear.
Hope this is helpful in some way.

I’m not sure that is going to solve your problem…
First off, it will only change the white balance, it won’t compensate for changes in brightness.
Second, as far as I know, it doesn’t adjust over time, it just does a one time adjustment based on an analysis of the picture.
Basically, I think you should really look into shooting it over again, this time with the camera on manual settings (or locked mode, or whatever abilities your camera has to hold the same settings and not compensate for changes in light).
If not, you’ll be stuck with painful keyframing and adjustment of possibly several effects at the same time. And even then, it still might not look realistic in the end.
Unless someone has a really good solution for you.
Either way, I’d recommend you use some feathering on your masks (assuming you’re using masks to make the vertical cut), to help blend the two pictures together. If you manage to do some color and light correction to make them look similar, this could be the final touch that completes the illution you’re after.
Good luck.

Just have to say, I’m not an AE export either… I was exported from my mother 🙂
But to be serious, what exactly do you mean by “Inside Out”? Is this some sort of reference that I have just missed out on?

Been looking into that skater-model myself, and it seems to do a very good job on those small subtle motion shots. Also quite versatile, and can be used for longer camera movements.

I have the exact same problem, any feedback would be really appreciated.
