In the render settings are you choosing a format that supports alpha channels for example TGA? You need to render out to one of these formats and choose 32 bit (millions of colors +). The extra 8 bits of information is for the alpha channel.

One way is select the top layer then Shift click the bottom layer while looking at the Info palette which will then tell you how many layers are selected. Keep an eye on the Info palette, it’ll reveal all sorts of useful info depending on what you are doing 🙂

Try selecting your object in the Scene Preview window and see if that helps.

You don’t need a plug-in. Just make sure that in Illustrator your File “Handling & Clipboard” preferences are set to “Preserve Paths”, then just copy the path and paste onto your layer in AE.

EFFECT > DISTORT > OPTICS COMPENSATION (adjust the Field of View property)
EFFECT > DISTORT > SPHERIZEEither of these should give you what you’re after.
