  • Rendering with both processors on a G5

Having just bought my first dual processor mac, I was expecting to see After Effects render using both processors, speeding things up a bit. But when I use the Apple Activity Monitor during a render, the %CPU for AE rarely goes above 120%, suggesting the application is not fully utilising processor 2. I was expecting to see %190 or so. Anybody know about this? Thanks in advance.

Yes, that would be nice …

The only way I’ve been able to “pin” the processors is to render a still sequence using the multi-machine render preset, but using two instances of AE both rendering the same project. When the Render button is hit for each project, frame 1 is rendered by one instance, and frame 2 by the other instance, happily leapfrogging the rendering until done.

    To recap, on OSX:
    1. Set up the render, making sure that “skip existing files” is checked. Close all windows except the Queue to avoid confusion.
    2. To activate the second instance, duplicate the AE app in the applications folder, then double-click on the duped icon.
    3. Open the project that you just set up. It should be ready to render.
    4. Click “render” for each Queue.

You want processor activity? This’ll give it to you. 🙂

    Hope that helps,
    Steve

Can’t you setup a render farm and have the second processor render in the background?

Well, you can start two instances, one for rendering, and one for working on another project. You can also set up a render farm, but I don’t think you can dedicate a specific processor to the job.

    I could be wrong …

This one uses the app and the render engine, not a duplicated app 🙂

I have a DP1.8 running 6.5 on 10.3.9. When I try this the “Skip existing files” option is not available. ???

It’s only available when you’re rendering a still sequence. That’s the only way to take advantage of multiple instances on a dual-processor machine.

What are you Output Module settings? Codec? Format?

(The multi-machine render settings and output module settings are good shortcuts.)
