If you want to make your current mac a screamer, get a least 16 gigs of RAM. If you want to go even farther, swap out the OS hard drive with a 500 gig SSD. OWC (Macsales.com) can hook you up with both. We got the new 12 cores and they’re great, but our Hapertown 8 core is still rock solid with 16 gigs of ram.
The 12 cores only rock for apps that take advantage of them – which means FCS3 doesn’t really a difference. CS5 is supposed to be faster, but I don’t really notice much of a difference.

Why only use browsers? It’s been working flawlessly with our Apple mail, and if you set up the gmail host as an exchange server on iphone mail – you get push :).

If you can identify that the problem is hdlsr footage at prores hq, wouldn’t that be better than being frustrated? Seems like a far easier experiment than reinstalling the OS three times…

If your project is close to due, I’d find an alternative to those plugins if I were you. I wonder if you only went Prores instead of ProresHQ if that would eliminate the problem. HQ obviously takes up more resources. Why don’t you do this – take a sequence that can cause the problem, use media manager to create and recompress the short sequence to standard ProRes in a brand new project, then close the HQ project and try to make it crash with the non-HQ footage.
If you find that HQ footage is causing your problem, recompress all the DSLR footage to standard prores. As was mentioned before, ProResHQ converted dslr footage does nothing but reduce resources and use more disk space on your system.
It’s possible what solved my issue was fixed in OS updates.
And it’s sunday on a long weekend, so I’m not using my own system resources to ensure proper capitalization and spelling!

Do you have a Kona 3 installed with the latest software? One thing I did around the time that I was having problems was downgrading to the 7.5 Kona software. -

Switch to 32bit kernel. There are pref panes you can instll for this. I used to have at problem but that seemed to solve it. I have the 12 core as well and documented this the first week it came out. I don’t have the problem anymore.

We migrated our email system to Google Apps last week. The free version gives you up to 50 users and was set up in a night. It operates via exchange, pop, or imap. So far it’s been flawless, and the web access is essentially gmail, but with your own domain name.
The best part is we don’t have to have an engineer sit around maintaining a server.
It’s perfect with apple mail, outlook, and iOS devices.

How did that work out for you? Next big project I’m yanking this 4322 out I think, but I’d love to know how it works for you.
Are you running 2Tb drives?
