Honestly Bob, I’d avoid Seagate if at all possible. Been burned by them several times now.

I have the 128 SSD in the new macbook air. I can’t attest for the larger ones, but SSD’s are fantastic for the OS drive.

I’m curious to see if your RR performs with the same erratic speed as mine. The numbers will kick out 700mps and make it look amazing, but then I see the graph and the HP speeds drop down to almost nothing for a second here or there. Kind of impossible to expect a tape to lay back correctly when your speeds get dropped like that. The new ATTO in our edit 1 system is much more stable, albeit the numbers returned are often slower. I’ll take slow and steady vs erratic. I’d like to see if it’s just my card or a universal thing.

Graham, would you mind posting an Aja system test of the highpoint raid? I’m specifically interested in the graph part. The Aja numbers are misleading, but the graph shows just how erratic the hp card is, in my experience. Switching to atto saved me lots of stress.
I used to brag on my rr4322, too.

I only suggest the SSD for the OS and Applications system drive. They’re smaller, but you shouldn’t be putting media on your OS system drive anyways. You get much faster boot times and app launch times with SSD.

Because the prices are pretty affordable, perhaps you should consider getting a blue-ray drive from OWC (or somewhere else – OWC just makes great tutorials for how to install based on your version of mac pro). I have the pioneer Blue-ray burner. It’s a convoluted and frustrating process to play BlueRay video (it really doesn’t work yet), but burning data discs is actually pretty easy now – and it burns dvd and cd formats, too.
No sense in throwing good money after bad if a drive is dying.

Sounds like your TM isn’t big enough. By dragging the folder out of the TM backup, you’ve forced TM to treat the copied folder as a brand new drive, on top of the backup that you’ve already got of the dead drive – doubling the amount of TM space needed for the same data. If you’re certain you’ve got all your files back, format your TM drive and start it as brand new backup. OR – get yourself a new TM drive that’s much bigger and store the old TM drive labeled neatly with today’s date. I recommend the latter as you’ll always be able to return to this date with your data.
Drives die, so extra backups of old data is never a bad thing.

Does the DVD in question work on any other computer, mac or pc? What OS was the DVD burned with?

You’d love the 8 core or 12 coming from a G5. I think the 8 is actually faster for specific tasks as it’s clocked higher, but the 12 will be better for rendering CS5 and Lightwave 10 (64 bit).
While SSD’s in a RAID would be nice, if money is a consideration look into a ProAvio 8 drive enclosure and an ATTO R380 – you can have 16TB’s in RAID 5 for 3k plus the cost of the MAC. I do recommend an SSD for the OS drive. It’s a bit speedier opening and running apps. I have a 12 core and an older 8 core. The 12 is fast with SSD and RAID for video editing/storage, but the 8 is still rocking on Final Cut and CS5.Just don’t get a Highpoint RAID card.

Awesome. Do look into more affordable SSD’s for the OS drive. It’s what makes the new macbook airs fast, and we have the SSD with the 12 core. It does speed things up a bit.
