I’m always an early adopter, but Snow Leopard has been out a good long while now and most of the kinks are out of it. We run AE4, AE5, and all other applications with it with no problems.
It’s not like you’re upgrading to Vista or something like that. Why not just clone your system drive to an external drive if you have one laying around, then upgrade it to Snow Leopard. This way, you can skip the clean install and just upgrade. If you experience problems, you can always do a clean install and recover everything from the cloned external drive. Everybody wins.

The danger with day rates is that if you’re fast, you’re going to be punished for it. This could lead to someone milking the clock and working slow just for the full day rate, which is lame. For that reason, we rarely do half-days to our freelancers. The exception being if they have a doctor’s appointment or something that actually prevents them from being available.
My theory is that if you rock it in 5 hours when somebody else would take 8 or 9, you get the whole day. You shouldn’t be punished for being fast and good.

If your heart wants to be in Oregon, go. Things have an interesting way of working out when you do what you want to do.
If you stay in TV, great. You could always make wedding videos off of Craigslist to pay the bills while you get your bearings. Wedding video production is one of those areas where your talents in news can come in handy. I did it when I worked in news to supplement my income. You may find that you love the freedom it brings.

Make sure they work with your enclosure. I’ve switched my preference to 2TB Hitachi Deskstars over Caviar Blacks. Some enclosures don’t like the WD Caviar Blacks, but the Deskstars are pretty affordable right now ($115 on Amazon) and I’m really pleased with their performance in my 2 drive NAS system in RAID 1.

I remember when my friends and I used to make fun of Final Cut Pro – it was only about 7 years ago. Oops.
One day all editing will be done via touchscreen. Personally, I’m looking forward to it. Considering the new FCP update is rumored to be just around the corner, it may be sooner than we think.

I use 3 lenses. A 24mm L 1.4, a 50mm L 1.2, and lastly a 10-22mm Sigma. We have the 75-200 kit zoom lens – and it stays in the Pelican case 100% of the time. For video I’d be hard pressed to use anything closer than the 50mm because even the slightest camera touch can look like an earthquake when you’re zoomed in tight. Keep in mind, the APS-C sensor crops everything on the 7D to where 50mm is more like 64mm.
If you’re looking at the 7D, a 5D isn’t much more expensive. Or, perhaps you could skip the 7D and get a T3i that’s coming out in a few weeks. Personally, I’m looking forward to a 5D Mark III (or will it be called 6D?). Canon has a press even on 3/1 from what I hear, and they’re certainly due for a 5D refresh.
The 7D can’t handle the Magic Lantern software, so you can’t bump up the data rate on it if that’s something you’re interested in.

I’m in the same boat my man. I have a feeling there will be a Thunderbolt PCI card eventually – specifically because they’re saying one isn’t available right now. Have faith – we still have the fastest macs on the planet!

Walter – you do this every time a new FCS rumor pops up :). Nobody wants an unstable system – can’t we just dream of what could be without the Debbie Downer? There will be enough warnings when it’s actually released. Right now, let’s just revel in the hopes of what could be vs what will probably be.

I agree about the small size – when working with dual 27 cinema displays, I feel like I’m looking at ants when I try to work.
I’ve been playing with new apps built for Mac like Pixelmator and Cheetah 3D. They’re so robust that I’ll accept some of their limitations to support them. I’d also like to see FCP rewritten in 64 so that we take advantage of all my RAM and extra cores. A new refreshed UI would be fine by me. Apple recently patented a new edit to tape system, so it would be great to see that play out. The ability to make templates for graphics like the motion templates, but customizable within FCP would be nice.
Imagine if the faces feature in iMovie were included – first – it would be fantastic – second – it would be an incredible time suck as the system processes all the footage. If done correctly though, faces could be incredibly useful.
There is so much that can be improved upon in FCP. Watch folders and a more active media manager system could also be nice.
And hey, maybe we’ll finally get 64 bit quicktime to boot!
