  • If the source material was 16 mm you can use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown and create 24fps QT files. That will get rid of the interlace issue. Any codec digitizing interlaced source material will have problems playing back on a computer, not just pro res.

  • Shane is right, prores is a great codec for archiving. Remind the director that beta sp is also a compressed format. Some people here the word compression and think it’s bad. Every video format in existence has used tricks, analog and digital to reduce the amount of information being recorded.

    The folks over at Zacuto have done some extensive testing of DSLRs vs Kodak and Fuji stocks. They used the same Zeiss lenses on all the cameras to eliminate lens differences. Bottom line is that film still wins, with 2 stops more latitude than the best DSLR. But the film folk interviewed in the videos were all blown away by the results of the DSLRs. Canon seems to have the edge over Nikon and Panasonic DSLRs.

    I know in the case of our older Apple Xserve Raids, rebuilding takes place in the background with a minor performance hit. We have an Xsan with 6 Xserve Raids, each raid array is seven drives, half of an Xserve raid. When I pop in a new drive, there’s more activity on that particular array, but none of the up to 12 users who are connected even notices a performance hit.

    Raid 5 always seems to be the best combination of security and throughput. Compared to the risks of no redundancy, I’ll take raid 5 any day. Data is always at risk in this business, the best we can do is minimize that risk.

    That is correct, you have to keep the whole file structure in the PRIVATE folder intact. You can delete clips while the card is in the camera as the metadata will be correctly updated.

    True, Walter. But Mat’s talking about an iMac, so no external cards to do aggregate ethernet. I’ve spoken to the guys at Small Tree and they’re doing some amazing things over ethernet. But it’s hard to beat the cost of a simple 2 drive raid on an iMac.

    I deal with a 12 suite Xsan at work, but a 2 drive Graid at home is great on my iMac. It’s all a matter of needs and budget.

    I don’t know where your getting the idea that ethernet is faster than FW800. Technically it’s one gigabit, but the reality is that there is a lot of overhead, splitting files into little chunks and reassembling them on the other end, great for sending files across the country via multiple paths, but not good for editing.

    There are some custom ethernet file sharing systems out there, as alternatives to Fibre channel based systems. But none of them are going to be as cheap or as simple as buying a FW 800 raid.

    When redigitizing, FCP goes back to the original AVCHD files, I’m not transcoding from Prores LT to regular or HQ. So the bottom line is you can safely delete your Prores files after editing, knowing that you can always transcode the original files again and preserve all the timecode.

    Yeah, I’ve done that cheat as well. It works reasonably well, but not something I would rely on. I haven’t noticed any aliasing issues when down-converting 1080 to 720, but I haven’t looked closely at it.

    I also backup files to data DVDs, one 16GB card spans across 3 DVDs using Toast. It’s time consuming, but nothing wrong with being anal when it comes to your data. USB rives are pretty cheap though, buy two and keep one offsite for maximum data protection.

    I’m head of post-production for Paperny Films in Vancouver, we don’t work the HMC150 at work. I use the HMC150 on my own pet projects.
