    Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the previous help.

Having scoured the forums it seems that pulling media to an imac over ethernet is more desirable than a firewire 800 2Tb G-Raid drive, which was my original plan.

Now I have a fairly recent quad core pc with a realtek pci-e gigabit ethernet connection and at least some sort of sata. I’m trying to fathom which variety.

You can probably guess what my question is…

Is it possible to configure the PC, perhaps with the addition of a sata 300 card and drives, to act as nas storage for the imac?

I’m somewhat out of my depth at this point so excuse any terminology mistakes.

    Thanks for any the help.

    Mat

I don’t know where your getting the idea that ethernet is faster than FW800. Technically it’s one gigabit, but the reality is that there is a lot of overhead, splitting files into little chunks and reassembling them on the other end, great for sending files across the country via multiple paths, but not good for editing.

There are some custom ethernet file sharing systems out there, as alternatives to Fibre channel based systems. But none of them are going to be as cheap or as simple as buying a FW 800 raid.

    Cheers

With the right setup, it is. You just need the right cards, the right RAID and the folks who know how to tune your system correctly.

True, Walter. But Mat’s talking about an iMac, so no external cards to do aggregate ethernet. I’ve spoken to the guys at Small Tree and they’re doing some amazing things over ethernet. But it’s hard to beat the cost of a simple 2 drive raid on an iMac.

I deal with a 12 suite Xsan at work, but a 2 drive Graid at home is great on my iMac. It’s all a matter of needs and budget.

    Cheers

John, what type of editing are doing with the graid? What codecs? How many streams? Any issues with dropped frames or slow render times?
