Just a question out of curiosity here, especially with all the announcements at NAB…have you finally warmed up to the idea of DSLRs as a realistic production tool or are they still just “toys”?

April 19, 2010 at 4:56 pmI’d like to chime in if you don’t mind.
I haven’t been a big fan of DSLR cameras either – not because of their image, but because of how small they are and the lack of common connections we’re all used to.
But I saw at NAB that Sony AND Panasonic both have cameras come out with really big sensors. I believe the Sony has a 35mm and the Panasonic has a 4/3″ chip. THOSE I’m more interested in because they do have features we’re used to. And apparently the image sensors are optimized for video, but i don’t really know what that means exactly, haha. I’m just taking their word for it.
I think the DSLR cameras were big step in the direction of video cameras using larger sensors.
And to get a little off topic: as much as I like Panasonic, I don’t understand why their new HPX370 STILL uses 1/3″ sensors, The EX3 and EX1 have half in sensors….what’s the hold up?!

Just a question, do you shoot or just post? If so, what format(s) do you shoot in?

April 19, 2010 at 8:44 pm[Dave LaRonde] “Some camera manufacturer — my money’s on Canon — will doubtlessly come out with a camera that utilizes the same sensor and the same imaging system, but which is designed for efficient video production. It’ll probably have very good audio recording capabilities, negating the need to record double-system… a boatload more storage, too. “
You mean like the Arri Alexa that was a huge hit of the Supermeet at NAB?

April 19, 2010 at 9:02 pmPanasonic is going to offer this.
Not really a show stopper, but you can see they are listening and testing. 4/3″ chip.

That made me laugh at NAB when I heard 4/3. I guess 1 and 1/3 takes too long to say for the film guys….
And what’s interesting is it’s a square chip I believe.
