You’re right that these formats are non-square. The issue, though, is why AE incorrectly displays this footage by default when creating a new comp. DV NTSC is also non-square, yet requires no pixel aspect correction.
My understanding of pixel aspect correction is that it is used when creating round graphics in a square pixel comp so that they will display correctly when rendering to a non-square format – not so that AE will correctly display non-square footage in a non-square comp.

In AE under Project Settings, check Match Legacy After Effects Quicktime Gamma Adjustments.

Be sure the color of your font is not the same as the background color.

Sounds like you’ll have to do morphing using Reshape. Very tedious and lots of keyframing.

Watched it again and stand corrected.
How about dividing the graphic into a series of layers via masks. Make em 3d. Keyframe their inital position. Move these keyframes down the timeline. Proceed as from above, moving the layers individually back in Z and to the side. Maybe slide them up or over a bit in the middle to make a slight arc. Stagger the layers in time. Nice eases at the end and fade out.
    Still don’t need a camera.

Hmm. okay. I tested that and you’re right. What’s weird, though, is that this has only been an issue since AE 7.
AE 6.5 correctly interprets the footage on import as 1280 x 720, Square Pixels, and requires no correction
    CS3 imports & interprets the same footage as 960 x 720, 1.33 p.a.r. and requires correction.
Why do you suppose that is?

No pixel aspect creation. It just works. If the shot is going back to FCP, though, it will have to rendered nonsquare.

Just that it’s going to have to be rendered to something else anyway. Unless you Animation as the sequence codec. But then you won’t won’t be able to preview on a monitor and it will drop frames all over the place.

The blocks aren’t really even coming together – they’re just moving forward in z to about the same point and vanishing. No need to move the camera. No need to create a camera. Just toggle the block layers to 3d and animate their z position, starting with a negative value and going to positive. You’ll need to offset their initial x position as well.

    It’s safe now.
