Simple Choker can expand the matte as well, maybe to better effect than Minimax.

Try tweaking the Levels effect, and maybe smart blurring that layer as well. I think (but I’m not sure) than Minimax may help too.

How about duplicating the layer, then applying Shift channels to the one above, setting all to Blue. Pump the levels on that and use it as a Luma (or Inverted Luma) track matte for the original layer.

I’m going to go out out on a limb here – given that I don’t know anything about your project – and say that you can probably accomplish whatever it is you’re trying to do (warp/morph?) much easier with the Puppet Tool.
Reshape is pretty clunky and, as far as I know, rarely used these days.

I’m thinking the footage is being interpreted okay, it’s just that AE is displaying the native resolution in the comp window, rather than the display res. You can toggle on the pixel aspect correction button at the bottom of the comp window to see the correct display resolution.
As to frame rate, hmmm… I’ve never seen AE improperly interpret the frame rate. Field order occasionally, but not frame rate. Perhaps this footage was accidentally shot 1080i?
One other thing – if you’re running any version of AE prior to CS5, this footage will not work properly in its native HDV format, and will need to be converted to one that AE can work with.

Try this and season to taste.
Draw a shape layer rectangle that is larger than and fully surrounds the text.
Shape Layer Add > a Gradient Fill.
Twirl down the Gradient Fill controls and Edit Gradient.
Adjust the gradient so that it is black at either end fading to white in the center. You may need to rotate the Shape Layer so that this gradient lines up over a line of text. Scale it vertically so that the black edges spill into the space between the lines of text. You’ll need to lower the opacity of the shape layer so you can see the text below.
Between the text and shape layers add an Adjustment layer. To this apply Effects > Distort > Displacement Map.
Set Horizontal Displacement to 0, vertical to something in the negative tens (depends on your text size.)
Use Luminance for Vertical Displacement.
Then set the Displacement Map Layer to the Shape layer.
Now you can animate the vertical position of the shape layer to “roll” the effect over the lines of text.
You can parent a ruler graphic to the shape layer or vice versa.Joey Foreman

There’s no X, ProRes is the correct choice.
Do you have the latest update for your version of AE?
I haven’t heard of any crashing issues.I’m on CS4 on an MB Pro and work with ProRes all the time.
I’ve heard there were some issues with the latest ProKit update, but hadn’t heard any mention of problems related to QT files.

I’d be surprised if the answer were anything other than “nope, that’s just one of AE’s limitations.”
You can use your middle mouse wheel, or your laptop’s track pad to rapidly “scroll” the magnification, but it’s still limited to the same fixed percentages.
