I render out lossless from AE and make .mp4’s through Visualhub. Unfortunately Visualhub is no longer available for download, so you would need to find it elsewhere.
Otherwise you can use compressor to make H.264 files.
Squeeze works well also, along with Episode too.

[sammy jay] “Am I wrong to think it would be a better result to export from AE as lossless, then convert in QT to WMV?”

Try it out. I had many issues doing it this way. The WMV’s were jerky, unreliable, and sometimes had horizontal lines running through them. On multiple machines this happened. By going to H.264 first this seemed to solve the problem. Yes, it’s one more step of compression, but H.264 at best quality looks darn good!

Animation is your best bet. I have been struggling for years to make good looking WMV’s on my mac, but have a solution that works beautifully.
You need to have the upgrade of flip4mac though. First I render out to uncompressed 10-bit (you can use animation if you like), then I render out to H264 at best quality. Then through QT I open the H264 file and export out to WMV. It solves the jerkiness problems and also there was a problem of horizontal lines in the video. These aren’t uncompressed files by any means but I thought I would post this anyway.

Amen! At least someone has the balls to finally post this.

    RTFM!!

  • I use compressor all the time for broadcast stuff. Just use the mpeg-2 program stream preset.

I just take the line out from my mac and run it through the tape input on my mixer. way too paranoid of an errant alert or email sound or whatever winding up on a master.

  • looks like you downloaded a template right?
If so check with the website to see what plugins are necessary to make it work. a lot of the time they will get you fully rendered efx that require plug-ins so that you don’t need to have the plugins to make the templates work. if you didn’t read the fine print and it says that you HAVE to have the plugin first before you can use the template then you are kinda screwed.

  • after you change the duration in the browser, right-click on the cross dissolve and set to default transition. if i remember correctly you have to do both, even though it’s already underlined as the default.

with bcc extruded text you can map any material you want to the sides, faces, bevels, whatever.
I’m finding that I’m using it more and more in my workflow. I do love invigorator, but BCC is gaining ground. Plus I love that you can animate the 3d orientation of the text without necessarily using a camera.
but it has it’s drawbacks as well. 1st off is jaggedy edges. they did just do an update which has a softening option, but if you are looking for really sharp 3d text for at least NTSC, it’s not stellar.
also i have issues with the text being too big for the layer and the sides getting cropped off. haven’t really found a workaround for that yet.

  • Or just invest in a real converter box. You can’t realistically expect to get fantastic results from software that is not designed for the job.

But since that’s pricey and not affordable for most, Dave’s suggestion is spot on.
