At this point I think you either need to get a tower, have somebody else do this for you, or have the original vendor send a new file to you in another codec. It seems you are limited by your hardware…
HD is expensive.

I don’t have a Matrox, but is there any way to swap out your reference?

So no external monitor to see fields? I guess in FCP right click the file, go to item properties, then format. What is the frame rate?

Also if you can’t play the file off your hard drive or the external, FCP might not let you either… We will see when it’s prores.

Step through your footage frame by frame and see if it’s interlaced or not. That should clear that up. And HQ isn’t really necessary but can’t hurt.
Also, what are your system specs / drive arrays. The stuttering could be from H.264 or not having a fast enough system for “HD”.

And the loveliness of crashing FCP every 5 minutes. Anybody else having issues? I had to switch back to 7.1 and now all is good.

Are you working in 10 bit or 8 bit? Working in 8 instead of 10 might turn a red render bar into a green one for real time playback.

Or, you can get an external monitor that will stretch your 4×3 anamorphic to fill the 16×9 monitor and not have to worry about it.
