“On the timeline, I highlight it, then I go to export, and then I click on QT ref, it sends the file to my hard drive.”
Once this is done, open SS and IMPORT the QT file. Assign the file one of the presets that meets your needs, or modify one of the presets by double clicking on the video attributes and then the audio attributes.
“What I don’t understand is how to open up Squeeze.”
You should have a SS listed under “Start/All Programs.”

August 31, 2009 at 3:59 pm in reply to: Can’t Export From Media Composer to Quicktime file 5mbAvid has a function where you can send the QT ref directly to Sorenson (opens the program and readies the fie for encoding). I find it doesn’t work every time as advertised. So what I usually do is save my QT ref (Avid will make a video and an audio file) to a folder. Then, when I open Squeeze, I import the QT ref file (the .mov–Squeeze will use the accompanying audio file). Select your output settings and squeeze away. The resulting file will be a single .mov, .wmv, etc., with both audio and video.

Does your Avid system have Sorenson Squeeze? If so, just export a QT reference file and let Squeeze use that. You will find numerous presets in Squeeze to get what you are looking for; moreover, they are completely customizable.

August 17, 2009 at 12:36 am in reply to: All Media is OFFLINE but MXF Files are all there.Brent,
Go to Windows Explorer and select the Avid MediaFiles folder. Right click on the folder and make sure “Read Only” is not selected. Relaunch Avid. Do the clips show up now?

I use Sorenson Squeeze 5.1. It does convert the files to .mov that Avid can use, but the resulting files don’t look as clean as the original footage, and the encoding takes FOREVER.
I’m looking for a real solution as well.

I agree with Michael, but, based on what your final use for the videos is, I would also try a short sample for comparison at 2:1. The resulting video may not show any significant compression, and the file size difference is notable.
All based on your final destination, useage, etc., of course.

June 16, 2009 at 3:38 pm in reply to: Upgrading from Express Pro 5.7 to Media Composer 3.0 (not 3.5)Matt,
Your projects should upgrade nicely from XP to MC, depending on how complex and/or reliant your XP edits are to 3rd party applications that may not be included in MC. There are some significant changes to file structure and locations, etc. in Media Composer. You should read the readme thoroughly before upgrading.

Here is a great way to do this, thanks to Avid’s own Michael Phillips:
