Not 100% sure on this one, but I think the Kona adds pulldown based on the type of sequence you’re playing back, and not on a clip by clip basis. i.e. if you edit a 23.98 clip into a 29.97 sequence, Final Cut will render the pulldown, then you’re playing back a 29.97 clip as far as the Kona is concerned. FCP does not do a great job at pulldown, at least not compared to the Kona or a software conversion such as you could do with After Effects or Compressor, but you could edit the 23.98 clips into the timeline and then process them later for better pulldown handling.
I have no idea what’s causing the issues on your client monitor.
When you say you’re “going to broadcast,” specifically what format are you delivering?

I never buy the fastest model…usually it’s 10% faster and 30% more expensive than the 2nd fastest model, which is not much of a payoff. Also, if you can use a screwdriver, you probably have enough technical ability to install your own RAM and hard drives, and you will save a lot of money buying these from someone other than Apple. otherworldcomputing dot com and crucial dot com are a couple of favorites for memory, and newegg for drives.

Final Cut Pro does not make cmode EDLs correctly. Never has – even though in the EDL export menu there is a setting for “Source Sort,” it doesn’t work properly.
Here’s what I do: export an EDL, using either Master or Source sort, then use the Import feature of Excel to import the EDL into a spreadsheet. During the import process, you’ll be able to specify the position of the column breaks, and once you finish importing you can use the sort functions in Excel to sort by reel # and timecode. Not much use including any extra information like notes in an EDL like this since once you sort they will be separated from the edit event to which they apply.
If you don’t have Excel, you can use TextEdit to open the EDL and manually move the edit events into the right order. This is not so bad if you’re dealing with a :30 commercial or two but it’s painful for long format work.

I’ve bought several Mac Pros and laptops from our local Apple store, thinking that maybe it would help if I ever needed quick service, to have spent a lot of money there. But it’s not the case. our Apple store is so crammed with customers that when I needed service on my laptop, it was much quicker to mail the thing in and have it repaired. 4 days versus the store estimate of 10 days. So the only reason I buy anything there is convenience.

I use Excel to import EDLs when I have to do a Cmode list (sorted by source reel and timecode, not sequence inpoint) and I use the File>Import feature rather than just the File>Open feature. Import allows you to select your line breaks based on the information in the source file (your EDL) but I guess it still may not work with the Notes due to issues noted in previous posts.
There are some really great deals on Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac right now. I just bought three licenses for $79 each at Tekserve – this is the full suite of Office apps at a massive discount from normal price. Although you can use the free Open Office for a lot of the same tasks, if you want to interface with the rest of the world you really need a copy of Office, even you snag the previous version off Ebay. If you’re used to working with Sapphire, and you have the budget, you can get them for FCP and it will get you up to speed quicker than learning handles on a new set of plugins. Plus Sapphire is a pretty comprehensive set if you get the entire collection. My only problem with plugins in FCP is I can’t stand the keyframing functionality of FCP, the render times or the quality issues with FCP plug-in renders (some work fine, some not), so for anything I really want to shine I exit to some other program like AE or combustion.
Avid’s keyframing isn’t really any better, so it’s not as if you’ll be losing a lot of tricks. Both programs are good at editing and mediocre for effects/graphics.

Having gone through this in the past, I had to contact Sony to find out for sure whether I had a /1 or not. You can call them and have them check the serial number of the monitor to be sure. Not all /1 monitors were labeled as such, is what they told me.

I can second a vote for Caldigit. I’ve had an HDPro for a couple of years now and it’s been rock solid. I’ve also gotten very good tech support from Jon and Leslie at Caldigit, and they seem to do a great job keeping their drivers up to date as Apple release update upon update to their OS.

Forgot about that setting…it’s been a long time since I used a 2-monitor setup. The client monitor is a Panasonic 50″ plasma, so it should work.

It’s actually not unusual for non-competes to be initiated at the end of a working relationship. Usually the situation is one where the company is letting the employee go, but with a substantial severance package which is conditioned on the employee signing the noncompete. If the employee is leaving of their own accord then this “olive branch” becomes more of a bribe, but it could still work.
