  • Final Cut Plugins – ‘Must Have’ shopping list

    Hello All,

We are just in the process of switching over from a couple of Media Composer Suites to FCP(sobb). They will be used mainly for documentary work and I think we will be looking at getting some ‘plugin software’ to improve our FX capabilites. We use a lot of the ‘saphire’ stuff currently and I just wondered if anyone had any strong opinions about what would be good to buy. There seems like a fair amount of choice out there but I just wondered what peoples opinions were in the real world for a ‘must have’ shopping list. For starters I’m looking at maybe Magic Bullet.

    Thanks in advance

    Daniel,

There are a few threads on this in the archives, but this would be my “must have” list:

    Eureka!
    Joe’s Filters
    Boris Continuum Complete
    CHV plugins
    Nattress Film
    Nattress Big Box of Tricks
    DH Box
    DVmatte Pro 3
    TMTC
    Stib’s Plugins
    Andy’s Better 3D

Noise Industries FX plugs are also very nice, but I don’t have most of them yet.

    Have a wonderful day.

Yeah, in the real world no many people can afford the Sapphire plugins (wish I could).
However for documentary like movies the list that Chris propose have everything needed and, I think, even could be shortened.
For me are essential the Nattress plugins that Chris mentions. I use also MagicBullet Looks and Colorista.
Then a bunch of free plugins that works really well like the Andy’s.
For something a bit more “elaborated” I go to Shake, Motion or any of my friends AE.

For Sapphire like plugins, look at NOise Inustries FX Factory. Lots of stuff there.

I rely daily on Big Box ‘o Tricks from http://www.nattress.com.

If you’re used to working with Sapphire, and you have the budget, you can get them for FCP and it will get you up to speed quicker than learning handles on a new set of plugins. Plus Sapphire is a pretty comprehensive set if you get the entire collection. My only problem with plugins in FCP is I can’t stand the keyframing functionality of FCP, the render times or the quality issues with FCP plug-in renders (some work fine, some not), so for anything I really want to shine I exit to some other program like AE or combustion.

Avid’s keyframing isn’t really any better, so it’s not as if you’ll be losing a lot of tricks. Both programs are good at editing and mediocre for effects/graphics.

Some cheeky self-promotion, at least my plugins are free:

After visiting Andy Mees’ site of free plugins, I was inspired to create some of my own.

I’ve created two free plugins and a few bugfix plugs to sort out some problems with the built-in ones.

I’ve also posted some tips showing how to make some improvements to transitions to make them more subtle by editing the source code and making your own plugins.
